I love old towns. Visiting them is like making travel in time. Vegeta, the old town in Las Palmas is not exception. It offers visitors to find interesting items to their taste. In this post, I show some general photos from Vegeta, old town of Las Palmas, Columbus house (Casa de Colón), Cathedral of Santa Ana, Plaza Mayor de Santa Ana in front of the Cathedral, dog sculptures in front of the Cathedral and folk music ensemble in front of the Cathedral.
Columbus house, opened 1951, offers awesome artefacts, such as scale models Columbus’s three ships (Santa Maria, La Niña and Pinta), maps and the second floor is dedicated to art, handwriting sample and route maps. Cathedral of Santa Ana about 500 years old is beautiful building. Dog sculptures in front of Cathedral of Santa Ana, but who sculpted them- mystery, but who scupled them – mystery. There has been discussion about the name of Canary Island. Some thinks that the name come canaries and others that the name comes from dogs. Latin word for dog is canis and nowadays canine is general term for a dog. We stopped for long time to listen folk music ensemble in front of the Cathedral of Santa Ana. Their song was beautiful. The young Lady was clear-voiced and other Ladies in colorful clothes wearing hats, which resembled those Indian hats that, I have seen in Quito, Ecuador.

La casa Columbus, inaugurada en 1951, ofrece artefactos impresionantes, como maquetas de los tres barcos de Columbus (Santa María, La Niña y Pinta), mapas y el segundo piso está dedicado a muestras de arte, muestras de escritura y mapas de rutas. La Catedral de Santa Ana de aproximadamente 500 años es un hermoso edificio. Esculturas de perros en frente de la Catedral de Santa Ana, pero ¿quién las han esculpidas? – misterio. Se ha discutido sobre el nombre de Canarias. Algunos piensan que el nombre viene de los canarios y otros que el nombre proviene de los perros. La palabra latina para perro es canis y hoy en día el término canino es general para un perro. Nos detuvimos por mucho tiempo para escuchar un conjunto de música folclórica frente a la Catedral de Santa Ana. Su canción fue hermosa. La jovencita tenia la voz clara y otras damas con ropas coloridas con sombreros, que parecían a los sombreros indios que, he visto en Quito, Ecuador.

Dans ce post, je vous montre quelques vues générales de Vegeta, la vieille ville de Las Palmas, la maison de Colomb (Casa de Colón), la cathédrale de Santa Ana, la Plaza Mayor de Santa Ana en face de la cathédrale, des sculptures de chiens devant la cathédrale et l’ensemble de musique folklorique devant la cathédrale.
La maison Columbus, ouverte en 1951, propose des objets impressionnants, tels que des maquettes de bateaux de Christophe Colomb (Santa Maria, La Niña et Pinta), l’écriture manuscrite de Colomb et des cartes océaniques et le deuxième étage est dédié à l’art. La cathédrale de Santa Ana,qui est environ 500 ans, est un bel immeuble. Les sculptures de chiens devant la cathédrale de Santa Ana, mais par qui été sculptés – mystère. On a beaucoup parlé sur le nom de l’île Canaries. Les uns pensent que le nom vient des canaris et les autres que le nom vient des chiens. So many beautiful things to see! What I enjoyed seeing was Columbus ‘s hand writing ,it’s an art in itself. The one musical instrument looks like it was made from bones,interesting!

I’ve always wondered how smaller European cities find the money to do their beautiful architectural restoration and ongoing preservation. I doubt the national Spanish govn’t has an endless budget.
Ah yes, Christopher Columbus the colonizer…in all dreadful honesty there’s some horrible past on the North American/South American side, when the Spanish explorers came over and just took over, plundered for gold, ie.

Thank You. I know the history of Columbus. You are right, but we have to remember, that much later there were slaves and serfs. Concerning about churches, in Finnish churches we do not have much gold, as a matter of fact, probably none, because our parishes are poor. This I can say, because I have shot about 440 photos from churches in Finland, but mainly on countryside where most beautiful old wooden churches exist. Here is good example, which is in Unesco World Heritage list also:

Wow. I love the clarity of your photos. I’m particularly in awe of the photo taken inside the Cathedral. Normally the lighting in churches is really challenging, but each of your photos look great. Obviously I have a lot to learn!!

I had a second and a third look at the folk musicians and just wonder how the xylophone is made. Did they use bones?

Thank You. Columbus’s museum is must, when in Las Palmas. Old town are worth for a visit everywhere. Before returning to the center of town we enjoyed a nice cup of ” Café con leche “, milk coffee or they call it there American coffee.

Then look at YLE TV 1, because there is program from Presidents’ Feast from his residence. This is tradition and this year it is important. Every year number of visitor are about 1800. Among them, there will be sure the Ambassador of United States for example. The program starts at 19.

This is the first time I’ve visited your blog. It is as you say – old towns and cities take you back in time. And so do those old maps of Columbus’s expedition to the Americas. That arrow pointing from Gran Canaria and La Gomera out towards nothingness. That’s how those seamen must have felt as they headed out to sea that day in september 1492. All this comes very much alive in those pictures. And I love that folk music ensemble. I would have liked to hear them.
