Oldest surviving diving suit.
In was sunny summer day when we made a short road trip from Oulu to Raahe (in Swedish Brahestad). Its distance from Oulu is only 75.5 kilometers / 47 miles to the south and from Helsinki 603 kilometers / 375 miles to the north. Raahe is a small town on the western coastline and there is not so much to see, except one thing, which is unique in the whole world – Oldest surviving diving suit! By surviving, I mean continuing to live or exist. Think about it.
It has nice nickname – Old Gentleman and with good reason. Old, because it is from early 18th century. From what material it is made out of? Well, mostly made of calf leather. Before showing my photos, you probably want to know what it looks like? Think that, You would see for the first time alien from the outer space, describes it best! After my photos, I give link to the page of Museum of Raahe, which tells thoroughly about Old Gentleman. If You want to meet personally Old Gentleman, then You meet him in the Crown Granary in Raahe.
P.S. Old Gentleman has visited to Lisbon 1998, also in Philadelphia and London.

Antes de mostrar mis fotos, es probable que vosotros quieren saber ¿cómo se ve? Piensa que, vería por primera vez un extraterrestre desde espacio exterior, lo describe mejor! Il a un beau surnom – Vieux Monsieur ça c’est avec un bonne raison. Vieux, parce qu’il est du début du 18ème siècle. De quelle matière on a fait ça? Eh bien, la plupart en cuir de veau. Avant de montrer mes photos, vous voulez probablement savoir à quoi il ressemble? Pensez que, vous verriez pour la première un alien de l’espacecosmique, c’est ça ce que le décrit le mieux! I shudder when I see this suit. How could anybody be crazy enough to risk their lives in a contraption like this?
But then you do what you are used to, I guess? Even today there are a lot of people being uneasy about donning a modern free ding wet suit.

Myself I have close to a thousand divs as a ‘freediver’ using wetsuits and air.
That wasn’t waterproof either!

The “Old Gentleman” looks rather special. 🙂 I have to agree that it reminds a lot of an extraterrestrial coming from another planet.
When I see old diving suits it often astounds me enormously that a human being could really dive in it – and survive! I know that in former times the main focus was to dive at a great(er) depth but not to swim rather long distances (horizontally). So it probably is understable that weight didn’t matter so much but was helpful instead when diving. Probably most divers at that time were raised by a rope and did not have to resurface completely on their own.
Here at the local harbour museum I could see a metal diving suit. Good lord, I could never wear this or the “Gentleman’s suit” without getting claustrophobic!
Matti, I really enjoyed that you and Anja appeared on the photos, too, as it was not only nice to see you but also very good to have a size comparison (suit, helmet etc.). Should your “alien” ever ask for an UFO, I’m only too willingly prepared to send them the spaceship you discovered in my recent “Planten un Blomen” blogpost. ^^

That is truly bizarre. Looks like a wood fitting in back for an air hose? Presumably pressurized via a bellows of some sort. Very clever. And the first person who ever tried it, VERY BRAVE!
