Old diving suit / Viejo buceo / Vieux costume de plongée / Velho traje de mergulho

In English:

Oldest surviving diving suit.

In was sunny summer day when we made a short road trip from Oulu to Raahe (in Swedish Brahestad). Its distance from Oulu is only 75.5 kilometers / 47 miles to the south and from Helsinki 603 kilometers / 375 miles to the north. Raahe is a small town on the western coastline and there is not so much to see, except one thing, which is unique in the whole world – Oldest surviving diving suit! By surviving, I mean continuing to live or exist. Think about it.

It has nice nickname – Old Gentleman and with good reason. Old, because it is from early 18th century. From what material it is made out of? Well, mostly made of calf leather. Before showing my photos, you probably want to know what it looks like? Think that, You would see for the first time alien from the outer space, describes it best! After my photos, I give link to the page of Museum of Raahe, which tells thoroughly about Old Gentleman. If You want to meet personally Old Gentleman, then You meet him in the Crown Granary in Raahe.

P.S. Old Gentleman has visited to Lisbon 1998, also in Philadelphia and London.

  1. When I see photos like this I think, who would volunteer to try this out? I’ll admit that it would not be me!

  2. That looks really ancient but rather funny. Great that it has survived. I wouldn’t have wanted to try it on… guess it was rather heavy in the water.

  3. Great photos of an amazing and very ancient diving suit. I wonder what it must have been like to wear this underwater? Very heavy and claustrophobic, I would think. Thank you for sharing. As always, very interesting.

  7. I shudder when I see this suit. How could anybody be crazy enough to risk their lives in a contraption like this?
But then you do what you are used to, I guess? Even today there are a lot of people being uneasy about donning a modern free ding wet suit.
    Perhaps especially at night?!

    • Hello Seenorway.

Always some people have been adventurous. Anyway, it was a cool and at the time, it was quite an invention. In 2013, they built a similar and in a test, it leaked. Thank You commenting.

      Have a great day!

      • Of course, it leaked! You can’t stitch something together and hope it to be waterproof?! 🙂
Myself I have close to a thousand divs as a ‘freediver’ using wetsuits and air.
        That wasn’t waterproof either!
(And it was never supposed to be!)

  8. buon giorno!

  17. The “Old Gentleman” looks rather special. 🙂 I have to agree that it reminds a lot of an extraterrestrial coming from another planet.
When I see old diving suits it often astounds me enormously that a human being could really dive in it – and survive! I know that in former times the main focus was to dive at a great(er) depth but not to swim rather long distances (horizontally). So it probably is understable that weight didn’t matter so much but was helpful instead when diving. Probably most divers at that time were raised by a rope and did not have to resurface completely on their own.
Here at the local harbour museum I could see a metal diving suit. Good lord, I could never wear this or the “Gentleman’s suit” without getting claustrophobic!
Matti, I really enjoyed that you and Anja appeared on the photos, too, as it was not only nice to see you but also very good to have a size comparison (suit, helmet etc.). Should your “alien” ever ask for an UFO, I’m only too willingly prepared to send them the spaceship you discovered in my recent “Planten un Blomen” blogpost. ^^
Thanks for showing such unusual and particular diving equipment!

Best regards from Hamburg and have a nice time!

    • Hello Betunada.

Thank You commenting. Before our previous home, we lived on countryside 19½ years. I would say that moving is good for a man, but to select the right place is not so easy finally. It must be considered from much point of views – carefully. I am glad that You love my photos.

      Happy new week!
