On the border / En el borde / À la frontière / Na fronteira

In English:

One foot in Sweden – the another in Finland & Sunset photos in Oulu

Tornio, Finland:

Facts: The distance between Tornio and Helsinki is 738km / 487mi. Situated on the border of Finland and Sweden in Lapland. Coordinates: 65°51.2′N, 24°08.5′E. Inhabitants 21837. Tornio forms a cross-border twin city together with Haparanda on the Swedish side.

As the subtitle tells in this firs part, I will show you photos from the border of Finland and Sweden in this first part. The place is the town called Tornio. It was in 2019 when we made a road trip to Tornio. In Tornio, we walked thru the shopping center called “Rajalla; in English on the border” from Finnish side and we found ourselves amazed how near the Swedish border was – just about 10 meters! Can you imagine it? Shopping center Rajalla in Tornio is situated on the island called Suensaari. Suensaari is also a neighborhood. The town, which you see in my photos, starting from the second one, is Haaparanta (Haparanda in Swedish), Sweden. My 14 photos show you how peaceful the border is between Finland and Sweden. I have made earlier two posts about Tornio presenting its frontier church and the windmill of Tornio, which can be seen among my post showing our traditional windmills.

P.S. When I prepared this post in January, I never could not imagine, that on the publishing day, this is not possible due to Coronavirus, because borders are closed.

Here is one of the best links to follow the situation of Coronavirus around the world:

Fast facts:

The word Quarantine comes from Italian word quarantena, meaning forty. Quarantena giorni means 40 days.

Oulu, Finland.

Facts: The distance between Oulu and Helsinki is 613km / 380mi. The distance between Tornio and Oulu is 133km / 82mi. Population 205303. Coordinates: 65°01′N, 25°28′E.

Second part of my post shows 9 photos sunset in Oulu in winter also. We spent in Oulu at the Nallikari holiday village. Nallikari has big camping area and it rents different sizes villas and cottages. There we stayed 10 nights in a pleasant cottage by the sea. I took photos after the sunset. My photo shows you the back side of the chalet. Oh boy, that was cold outside when dressed in indoor clothes. Normally it is so called blue hour, but in this case, it was more violet hour than blue hour. Three last photos show Witch’s Brooms. They look like bird nests in birches and I have told about them previously in one post with photos.

Thank you. Yes, someday there will be visitors, but just now we have many restrictions. For example, government is planning to close borders of province of Uusimaa, which contains many towns like Helsinki.

  5. Hi. That looks like a very remote and beautiful (and possibly very cold) place. 🙂 Also, just in case you were not aware, if you view a web page which is in a different language in Chrome, you can right mouse click to translate the page to whatever language you desire. I thought you might find this information useful to save publishing your posts in 4 languages. (Apart from saving you a lot of time, it might make your posts look a bit tidier and less confusing maybe). As you may know Switzerland is a landlocked country so we have a number of borders where you can be in 2 countries at once. In fact, near Basel I believe there is a point where you can be in 3 countries – France, Germany and Switzerland. I wonder if there is somewhere in the world where 4 countries meet? 🤔

    Comment by Alittlebitoutoffocus — March 25, 2020 @ 10:27 | Reply

    • Hello Mike.

Thank you. Languages are my hobby, so I will continue my translations! Translations keep my brain active. 🙂 I have 1500 French books and many in Spanish, Portuguese and only couple in English. It is nice to travel, maybe someday it is possible, when understanding what people speak. I know that is Switzerland there are four official languages and many borders. I have been in Zurich and Geneve, so I have some idea about your beautiful country.

      Stay safe and healthy!

  8. Borders are interesting places: both real, and yet almost imaginary. I have a photo of the exact border between our states of Kansas and Oklahoma; the border runs along a country road, and it looks exactly the same on both sides of the road. Your photos are entertaining and also lovely: such wonderful colors in the sunset! It will be good when we’re free to travel to enjoy such things again. Stay safe!

    Comment by shoreacres — March 25, 2020 @ 13:23 | Reply

    • Hello Linda.

As you described the border Kansas and Oklahoma, must be awesome. The border between Finland is natural, because people living on both sides have been married with each other’s, meaning that Swedish have married Finns and Finns have married Swedish. Tornio and Haparanda are practically twin towns. Most popular place to shoot border photos, is at the Arctic Cercle. I have a photo among my about page, when my wife has one foot on the south side of the Arctic border and the other on the norther side of the Arctic border. Thank you commenting.

  10. Saludos, Matti.

      Saludos,

The idea was great, but we had to relinquish it due to economic reason after having it nearly three years. BTW, there is hold every winter, except this winter, the unique race in the world:

Thank you. The border between Finland and Sweden is one the most peaceful border in the world. Occasionally customs stop cars to very that people do not smuggle too many products inside their cars which are not allowed in Finland. This product for example, is snuff. Allowed amount is 1000 grams of snuff, chewing tobacco and nasal snuff daily. Now passports, because valid driving license is enough.

    • Hello spixl.

You are right. It is not easy to stay quarantined inside the home and having only possibilities to quickly go to the nearby shops. Happily going to nearby nature paths are accepted. Southern part of Finland is isolated from the rest part. Those having permissions of their employers can pass the border. Others not having a valid reason, cannot pass the border.

      Stay safe and healthy!

  27. Hi, Matti! Thanks for this promenade in Tornio and Oulu. Looking at the sign with one boot in Finnland and one boot in Sweden, I noticed that the snow was cleared on the Finnish side, but not in Sweden 😉. How long the shadows are! The sun must be barely over the horizon. The vacation park in Oulu offers so much, it’s incredible. And the villas and cabins are lovely. Your sunset pictures are beautiful! I am glad you and your wife had this opportunity to travel before the virus hit. May we all be safe during this time of crisis!

    • Hello Claudinha.

You made an excellent question when asking why snow was cleared only on Finnish side. Thank you. Well, there is water very near to this place. Shopping center is on a peninsula called Suensaari. In winter and especially in the north, seas, rivers and lakes are frozen. It snows of course, in winter meaning that ice and ice snow the frozen water. Many years ago, we lived in the small town called Mikkeli. We had a lake called Saimaa very near to our home. In winters it was frozen meaning that people walked, biked and skied on it. White snow covered the ice of lake. There were even signposts on the lake, because people loved walking, biking and skiing on the lake. I give two links showing our walking on the lake:

      Walking on frozen lake

This post shows how in the spring snow and ice has started to melt. Melting on the day and freezing again at the night.

      Tracks and cracks on ice

      Happy weekend!

    • Hola Louisa.

Muchas gracias.

          Comment by Sartenada — April 5, 2020 @ 12:32 | Reply

    • Hello Anne.

This part of Finland is called Lapland. It is our favorite. It offers in winter for example, world’s biggest snow castle, reindeer rides and much more. In summer hiking on some of our Arctic hills is fantastic, because man meet there free roaming reideers.

      Stay safe and healthy!
