Two lock Canals / Dos canales de esclusas / Deux caneaux à écluses / Dois Canals de bloqueio

In English:

In Finland we have 31 lock canals which connect lakes and waterways. In this post I show to You photos from two lock canals. I love them, because they are situated on scenic places which means the beauty of the nature. I prefer to slow down my car by them and take a break when on road trip.

Those two canals are Canal of Karvio and canal of Varistaipale. Both of them are situated between the town of Varkaus and Joensuu very near to the Monastery of New Valamo. The length of canal of Karvio is 300 meters / 984 feet and it has only one lock. The length of canal of Varistaipale is 1100 meters / 3608 feet and it has four locks.

  23. Hello Matti
the landscape is beautiful and these canals make the scenery rather special. Besides this, it looks rather refreshing on hot and sunny days. All the green around, the water – no matter if smooth and shining or bubbling and with a lot of spatters at the locks. ^^
I once read an article about canoeists who visitied this region and if I remember correctly they even talked about white water rapids which some of them had to bypass by one of the canals crossing a lot of water basins and using the locks.

Very interesting again, your today’s post! And such a lot of great photos which not only show the gorgeous nature around but also various details of the locks and basins one can find (and has to manage) when driving on the canal of Karvio or Varistaipale..

    Have a nice weekend!

    • Hello Michèle.

Thank You for Your praising comment. Eastern regions are beautiful and sparsely populated. I tryed to remember white water rapids on this area, but they are more close to the eastern border. Fom here it is possible to pass thru “Saimaakanal” to the Gulf of the Finland. Then You have to pass more canals. In summer canal cruises between two towns is possible and quite popular. If You have time, please visit one of my post in which there is German text.

Thank You. Sorry for delayed answer. Yesterday we drove about 700 km and had many stops. We visited our father’s grave in Varkaus and shot a photo of old traditional windmill. It had broken down over the years, but still I photographed it.

        • Hello Heidi.

I clarify my words. We made a road trip from Helsinki to Oulu. Normally there is a shorter road with length of 625 km, but because we visited my late father’s grave near to the town of Varkaus (290 km from Helsinki), then our trip was 690 km due to another road. It is a Finnish habit to bring flowers to graves. This happens normally twice, in the spring and in the autumn. Here are photos from the same graveyard where my late father is buried.
