Snow Castle 2017&2018
This post shows You my photos from 2017 and 2018 presenting Snow Castle in Kemi. Snow Castle must be built every winter and it has different theme every year. In2017, the theme was Finland 100 years and 2018 animals of the forest.
Among photos of 2017, many snow carving presented scenes (Dog Hill) from Finland’s best children book author’s Mauri Kunnas. His books have been translated into thirty-four languages in thirty-six countries. Among photos of 2018, I loved most of all Kin Gong carving.
Snow hotel offers for a visitor, possibility to sleep in Snow Hotel, or in Seaside Glass Villas, ice bar, ice restaurant and chapel in which it is possible to get married.
Kemi is situated 711km / 442mi to the North from Helsinki. How to reach it? From Helsinki, by air 1 hour and 35 minutes. By car 9 h 16 min. Fastest, train 6 hours and 37 minutes. Many times, I took a night train from Helsinki and slept in it. Awaking up fresh in Kemi in the morning, because wagon-lits have a toilet and shower in their cabins.

Ses livres ont été traduits en trente-quatre langues dans trente-six pays. Parmi les photos de 2018, j’ai surtout aimé la sculpture Kin Gong.
Hôtel de neige offre pour un visiteur, possibilité de dormir à l’Hôtel de neige, ou dans les villas balnéaires de verre, bar à glace, restaurant de glace et chapelle dans laquelle il est possible de se marier.
Kemi est situé à 711 km au nord d’Helsinki. Comment l’atteindre? D’Helsinki, par avion 1 heure et 35 minutes. En voiture 9 h 16 min. Le train le plus rapide 6 heures et 37 minutes. Plusieurs fois, j’ai pris un train de nuit d’Helsinki et j’ai dormi dedans. Se réveiller reposé à Kemi le matin, parce que les wagon-lits ont des toilettes et une douche dans leurs cabines.

Incredible detail from facial expressions to bear prints on a ceiling. What is the temperature there? How long does the snow castle last? How long does it take to build?

Hello Clunegapyears.
Thank You. Different Finland from Your visit in Finland! This year when we visited it, the temperature on the way was -24℃ / -11.2℉ and when reaching the snow castle it was -24℃ / -11.20℉. Inside the castle, it is few degrees below freezing point. If I remember correct, it takes about 1½ month to build. They are professionals and the have good planning. It closes April 14, 2018. Then it will be demolished and it melts sometime in May, I guess.

Hello Svein.
Well, building it, takes about 1½ month. It will be demolished and finally sun melts it. Wast – maybe, but it depends who thinks so. If You would ask this from the citizen of the small town of Kemi, then the answer would be different opinion. This town needs tourists, which brings money to the town, gives work for people of restaurants, to many more, and awakes interest towards this town. If I have understand correct, Kemi is winter town and I am happy that they came up with this castle. This is my simple opinion!

It’s amazing and always leaving a lasting impression on me, Matti. I remember some of your posts you published in former years. As the motto is changing every year it’s gorgeous to see always new and different sculptures (and snow castles in general)!
I particularly like the animals shown this year. The owl, the bear or the “The Wolf And The Three Little Pigs”. Of course, King Kong looks stunning – but I couldn’t sleep there! 😀

What a lovely post, Matti! I’ve always wanted to stay in a snow hotel. Now that I live in Finland, I’m reconsidering. 😉 The artwork is amazing! Are the dining tables also made of ice? I noticed everyone in the pictures were wearing coats, so I’m guessing it’s cold.

Thank you praising this place. Kemi and its snow castle less known, because the Arctic Circle attracts tourists like honey attracts bees. I wish that You could visit it someday. At same time You could participate in Reindeer race in Oulu. Everything depends timing. The Arctic Circle is quite near to Kemi. Best way to visit these three place is train. Fast and comfortable.

They are great artists, the snow and ice sculptors! My respect and admiration! Beautiful pictures and an amazing place to be! Have a nice week! May I ask which camera you use? I see a Nikon, but what type and are you satisfied about your Nikon? I have two Nikon’s D5300, so I’m satisfied 🙂

Thank You leaving your kind comment. Mine is few years old Nikon D750. The best of it is that it can take photos really in the dark. It is full frame camera and its format is FX. Its ISO is Expandable to 51,200. Am I satisfied with it? Yes and no. My dream is to buy within couple or three year to buy N850. Now it is too pricey, but after two or three years, the price will come down.

I have my camera 3 and a half years. But until now I am still quite happy about it. Of course it can always be better, but photography with good equipment is quite expensive! So, I also do a few years with the cameras that I have. I have already bought a few new lenses and occasionally when the budget allows I buy something from accessories.

Hello Heidi.
Your camera is good as mine, but sometimes there are dreams. I have only one zoom lens (AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR), but I dream to get someday better zoom lens to shoot photos from birds for example.
