Nallikari winter village for the whole family.
Where? In Oulu, Finland. How fast to get to Oulu from Helsinki? By air 1 hour, by rail about 5 hours and 25 minutas, 8 hours by bus and by car 7 hours. Where exatly in Oulu? Very near the sandy beach of Nallikari. From Oulu city center there is a beautiful walking and cycling route, which passes through the island Pikisaari. Distance from the centre of Oulu is about 4 km / 2.5 mi. This winter village was intended for families and children. Children had possibility to participate in sledge rides with snow mobile, sledge rides with reindeer, sledge rides with huskies, snow tube rides, traditional rotating whipsledge rides etc.
This happening is arranged every winter from February to April. Easy to reach from Helsinki by air in one hour, by rail in six hours and by car in seven hours.
Because whip sledge may be unknown to many, I tell more about it. When I was young boy, I had possibility to ride on it on lake’s ice. On ice, it rotates easily and fast, by one or two persons. My three photos show a young girl riding on it pushed by two adults in the snow. The idea is “similar” which was seen in the James Bond movie Moonraker – centrifuge.
Whip Sledge has been mentioned in our literature in 1956. Definition of whip sledge: Whip sledge is on ice or snow in the periphery of the rotating sledge, which is rotated by man power. Can You imagine how fast it rotates pushed by four adults? After photos, I show a short video (35 seconds). After seeing this small movie, I could say that Finnish style centrifuge on ice and those people are crazy.

La distance du centre de Oulu est d’environ 4 km. Ce village d’hiver était destiné aux familles et aux enfants. Les enfants ont eu la possibilité de participer à des promenades en luge avec des motoneiges, des promenades en luge avec des rennes, des promenades en traîneau avec des huskies, des promenades en tube à neige, des tours d’une luge traditionnelle tournant sur la glace ‘whip sledge’, etc. Ce happening est organisé chaque hiver de février à avril.
Parce que la luge traditionnelle tournant sur la glace peut être inconnu pour beaucoup d’entre vous, je raconterai plus sur ce sujet. Quand j’étais jeune garçon, j’avais la possibilité de tourner sur d’elle sur la glace du lac. Sur la glace, elle tourne facilement et rapidement, par une ou deux personnes. Mes trois photos montrent une jeune fille chevauchée au-dessus de celle-ci qui a été pousseé par deux adultes dans la neige. L’idée est “similaire” qui a été vue dans le film James Bond Moonraker – centrifugeuse.

In nearby towns there are much to see, for example snow and ice art.

February is cold, but temperatures varies. In March, sun warms the weather and days are warmer than in February. In the town of Kemi, one hour by train from Oulu, there is every winter built world’s biggest snow castle. In Rovaniemi, there is Santa Claus Village at the Arctic Circle. Also by train easily. We will visit all these this winter.

Well, the temperature itself do not tell how cold it feels. In Finland, we are used to check from our phones not only the temperature, but also the real feel. One example: if the temperature is -13 °C and the wind is 5 meters in second, then the real feel is -21.2 °C on the skin.

The Winter Village looks like a lot of fun for the entire family. The snow sculptures are beautiful. Snow tubing is popular over here, although we don’t have nearly as much snow as you do. I hadn’t heard of a whip sledge before, and although I find it interesting, I don’t think I would like to try it.

Matti, I enjoyed your wonderful photos of the Nallikari winter village so much! The snow, sunshine and blue sky, friendly, bright colours – it’s a dream. And the idea of building such a winter village for the whole family is simply great. Sculptures, the reindeer and the sleighs, the kind of bobsled run or perhaps tube – and of course this very special (high speed) whip sledge! Fantastic!

After two weeks on Saturday 17th, there is in Oulu unique happening – Reindeer race. It is free for everyone! Participants come from many countries. I have been there twice, which means two posts. Oulu is easy to reach by train in 5 hours and 24 minutes from Helsinki. Next Sunday winter village is open for everybody. Distance from the market square is about three km. If You want more experiences, then take a train from Oulu to Kemi, where is world’s biggest snow castle. Here are collection of my photos from some years: Best Snow Castle photos. Train from Oulu to Kemi takes about one hour. If this is not enough to have winter experience, then take the train from Kemi to Rovaniemi. Trip takes 1 hour and 35 minutes. The Arctic Circle is from Rovaniemi only 8 km. Here is one of my post from there: Santa Claus Village at the Arctic Circle. Photograph with Santa is must for tourists. If these suggestions is not possible this winter, then next year same places wait for You.

The reindeer racing is on my birthday February 17th 🙂 Unfortunately I can not be there 😦 We have a difficult time at the moment, because my mom has been in the hospital and rehabilitation center for a few months and I have to undergo surgery again. I hope that it might be possible to go to Finland on a winter holiday next year! Thanks in advance for the invitation! I will certainly talk to my husband about it 🙂 I have already mentioned it but I will have to convince him. Maybe it will work if I show him your pictures 😉

This looks like glorious winter fun. I wish we could wave a magic wand to be there to try all of the activities. We have snow tubing in Canada at many of the ski hills. We love doing it. So hoping one day we find ourselves in Finland. Your blog has certainly inspired us to do so.

Thank You for Your kind words. Welcome. If You will come in summer, Finland offers different options for active vacation (biking?) Lapland (northernmost part of Finland) is in its beautiful in autumn, end of August / early September. Examples: North of the Arctic Circle 3 and Cruise on Lake Inari, which is 318 kilometers north of the Arctic cirle. In summer midnight sun is visible everywhere in Lapland. Summer Finland could be distributed into three part. Wildernesses on eastern region. Then there is Lakeland area. We love it, because there are small towns and villages for visits. Examples: Medieval castle of Olavinlinna and World’s biggest wooden church. Lakeland area offers cruises from its towns. This link shows our culture how to live by the Lake Saimaa – small cottages and everyone has own Sauna: Cruise to Rock paintings.
Southern and western coastline offers beautiful old small towns. For example biking from Oulu to Kotka offers beautiful landscapes and history. Two examples: Naantali and Hanko.

Do you think it is possible to rent bikes for a day ride here and there in your country? I’m sure there are many wonderful walks to be done as well as I have seen through your blog. I think that this site is best to get information about Finland. In Finland, we have good connections between towns (air, rail and bus). Renting car offers to You more possibilities to explore my country. You fly to Rovaniemi from Helsinki (near the Arctic Circle), rent a car there and start exploring easily. We have made thee road trips in the north and love all of them. When in southern Finland, traveling between towns is easy. I quick checked possibilities to rent bikes, nearly in every small town it possible. This official page helps You very much then when it is time to start planning. http://www.visitfinland.com/. One interesting thing to me is to know what You want to see. I have excellent list in my About me page. It tells than choice is huge, because You cannot see / explore in one visit.

If everything is going ok, next June with my son’s godfather I’ll go to Nortkapp! I’m excited to travel by car (an oldtimer 1980) for two weeks in Scandinavia…
From Nortkapp Norway, we are then traveling to Utsjoki, Rovaniemi, Kokkola (Rauma) and Turku before taking the ferry to Stockholm.
