  3. just Loved these photos. Such beauty. I used to do quite a bit of biking here In Hawaii until I got hit by a car. Back then it was not a bike friendly way to get around. You would think otherwise with such beautiful weather.

They are finely putting in better bike lanes and make it easier to get around.

I love how your country is so health conscious come rain or shine.

Thank You. People in Oulu go to their jobs by biking and shopping. Many old persons use bikes for a support to carry their buys.

  21. Hello Matti, your bikeways are very well prepared! Therefore it really looks possible and not too dangerous to bike on snow – of course equipped with studded tyres and rather warm clothes.
Here we don’t have a lot of snow and if really so, the situation on the roads and bikeways changes quite fast. Usually the snow in towns is thawing during the day or due to traffic but later during night it uses to freeze again which results in treacherous icy conditions in the morning (or generally next day). Only few people will risk heavy falls and bone fractures.
But let me still add one thing: I adore these trees! They are looking so gorgeous when frozen over!

Thanks for your interesting post and all the photos shown!
Have a nice week – Michèle

    • Hello Michèle.

Thank You for Your praising words. I have noticed that in Oulu, icy bike paths get quickly sand. It seems that there are different kind of snow – yes. Both of them are by the sea. It is not so slippery than in Helsinki. In Helsinki, bike paths are very soon covered by ice then in Oulu.

All the best for 2018. Matti

  22. What is the general temperature range in winter in Oulu there? I noticed they are cycling without helmets…which amazes me because the probability of falling off from bike on snow and ice is much higher. I’ve fallen 9 times off my bike in last 25 years. 8 of those times was because of black ice.

    Comment by Jean — January 3, 2018 @ 03:02 | Reply

    • Hello Jean.

Thank You commenting. I have not seen black ice in Oulu. After snowfall, snow is removed rapidly and if needed, they are sanded at same time. I have noticed that there are different kind of snow. In the north, snow seems to be drier than in Helsinki for example. The highest measured temperature in Oulu is +33.3 degrees (1957) and lowest -41.5 degrees (1966). I think that compared with Calgary, maybe same temperatures.

Our cold winter winds come from the Arctic Ocean and from the east. If vailing winds come across the Atlantic Ocean with Golf Stream, then we have “warm” and humid weather, which mean that no real winter.

In my pervious biking in winter post one year ago we discussed about the helmet.

      Happy 2018.

      Comment by Sartenada — January 3, 2018 @ 12:29 | Reply

      • There is also different snow qualities in Canada. In Alberta, the snow is a lot drier…in Calgary we use snow brush machines to remove thin layer of snow when it’s a light snowfall vs. snowplough for heavier snowfall.
Snowbrush machines can’t used in southern Ontario nor in Vancouver (if latter has snow which is rarer), because the snow is more moist.

        Comment by Jean — January 3, 2018 @ 18:43 | Reply

        • Hello Jean.

Thank You. I appreciate Your comment. In Finland, we do not use snowbrushes or I have not seen yet, but we use snow tractors and they sand if needed at the same time on sidewalks and for finishing crossings on roads. On roads we use big snow ploughs.

          Have a good day!

    • Hello Tanja.

How glad I am when reading Your comment. Thank You. Yes, it can be cold indeed. The cold itself is not so bad, than wind combined with cold. When we check the temperatures from our phones, it tells official temperature, but also the real feel! That is how the weather feel on the skin. One example. The temperature is -10 °C and the wind 20 meters in an hour, then the feel is- 23.2 °C. Think about it!

      Happy 2018.

  26. Thanks for liking my blog. I appreciate yours much too. Do you speak Spanish or just translate everything? In Central Texas, US, you can bike most days, but our blood is thin by the 100+F temperatures in the summer. Even with many layers we have trouble tolerating the cold, so many do not do it below 32F/0C. I am surprised in the pictures that no one has a face cover. Saludos, Sartenda! A Dude Abikes

    • Hello A Dude Abikes.

Thank You for Your kind and interesting comment. I did not know that in high temperature is thinner. We spent our vacation in Las Palmas, Spain where the temperature was 98.6℉. In addition, we are used to high temperatures in our Saunas. We prefer 98.6℉. 🙂 Thus, we endure cold and warm. Face covers are seen very seldom. I love languages and I speak them. They are my hobby as well as shooting photos. 🙂

    • Hello Emily.

Happy New Year 2018 to You and Yours. Thank you for Your kind comment. I wish that Helsinki would have snow cover also. Yesterday there was 40 cm snow in Oulu. Oulu is real winter / snow town. It has gorgeous winter happening for everybody and for children. This month I will post two gorgeous winter fun for children posts. It would be lovely if You could participate in them. Normally they are on first Saturday after mid-February. I am sure that little man would love them. In addition, You could participate in reindeer race, which is open for everybody free. I have noticed that You never commented / never seen these two awesome unique happenings in Oulu.

      First reindeer race:

      Reindeer race.

      Winter fun for children:

      Winter fun for children.

These two are held in same day at same place. Think that flying to Oulu takes only about one hour and train 5 hours and 25 minutes.

I could take photos from You when participating in reindeer race. My daughter consider also this winter to participate in it.

      Have a good day!

      • Wow, that looks like fun! I just read your other posts and now I want to pet a reindeer! I’ll look into taking a trip to Oulu. We haven’t been yet, and it would be a great excuse to play in the snow.
Thank you for sharing! I learn the best Finnish things from you.

    • Hello Johanna.

Yes, You said! It has been said that even daily walking is as healthy as biking. Well, both of them are good for a man. We walk daily at least one hour if the weather makes it possible. When going to shop we of course walk and we not using the shortest way, but longer way due to daily walk thus combining both – shopping and walking. Carrying food shops in the backpacks and the bags in hands, they raise fitness. Now You say – odd couple. Yes, we are, because “normal people” go shortest way for shopping, but we not. Who needs fitness centers! LOL.

      Have a god day!

  38. brrrr ! today I am considering a ride, but waiting for the wind to diminish, the ice (on the roads) to melt, and hope the temp increases a bit !

    Comment by betunada — January 8, 2018 @ 18:10 | Reply

    • Hello Betunada.

On day before Yesterday, we drove from Oulu to Helsinki 640 km / 336 mi after snowstorm and the trip went well but the driving time took about eight hours. One reason to it was the we have winter speed limits 80 km / 49.7 mi generally and on highways 100 km / 62.1 mi. Part of driving happened in the dark, because sun is over horizon for example at the level of Oulu about six hours. 🙂

      Have a good day!

  39. You beautifully captured the snowy landscape and the bikers. It’s lovely that the harsh winter season does not deter Finnish bikers from getting out and about.

    Comment by Bespoke Traveler — January 8, 2018 @ 23:21 | Reply

    • Hello Bespoke Traveler.

Thank You for Your kind word. Pure white snow is beautiful. When first time walking in winter in Oulu, we were not aware of the amount of bikers. Happily, we walked on the right side of sidewalks and bikers could pass us without contact easily. I have noticed that walkers in Oulu know, that walking on the right side of sidewalks is custom to which we are accustomed. Doing this way, walkers in different directions on both sides of sideways and bikers between them are in good collaboration.

      Have a good day!

  50. Looks beautiful there in the winter. Biking there looks fun in the winter until a slippery patch comes along 😉 The fat biking we do here is generally on mountain singletrack trails so that’s why we need the big tires. Otherwise you would sink immediately in the snow on the skinny tires. FYI … I spent 2 weeks in Finland a few years ago and absolutely loved it!! We went sea kayaking, camping, and had a great road trip. We love Finland 🙂

Thank You. I understand very well Your comment. I just wanted to tell, that winter biking in Finland is popular and especially in the town called Oulu. It was big surprise that You have visited in Finland.

In this post, there are people kayaking. Landscapes are beautiful alongside the lake and presents our habits to have summer cottages with Sauna by the lake.

I saw in You old post the photo presenting the castle of Olavinlinna. I have visited it many times, because I lived not so far away from it. I have good post, which presents it thoroughly.

      • We got to experience the Finnish sauna!! We were in a beautiful sauna and then we ran down a boat dock and jumped into the Baltic. The water was so cold it really took my breath away. We absolutely loved Finland. I would love to spend more time there kayaking and trekking. We also love to hunt mushrooms and blueberries so I wish we would have had time to forage in Finland. Thank you for sharing and commenting on my post. I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Kitos!!
