Walking around in Las Palmas

We had in October 30-years wedding anniversary. Because it was a big happening in man’s life, we decided to celebrate it abroad. Our choice was Las Palmas (flight time from Helsinki six hours), which is on the island of Gran Canaria on the Canary Islands. I suggested it, because in 1969, I worked there for my airline Finnair during 4½ months. In Las Palmas, I learnt to speak Spanish as the child learns.

Canary Islands are autonomous community of Spain located in the Atlantic Ocean, 100 km / 62 mi west of Morocco. Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria, has the population about 400 000 residents. It has many faces varying from arid volcanic areas to warm microclimate areas. It offers for active visitor many experiences, but the majority, I think, loves its more than 3 km / 1.6 mi long beach Playa de Las Canteras. How was the weather? Well, max temperature was 37℃ / 98.6℉. Daily variation was between 30℃ / 86.0℉ and 33℃ / 91.4℉, meaning that enjoyable summer weather.

Our hotel was right on the beach and we were lucky having our balcony on the eight floor facing to the beach. The sandy beach was clean, because nightly it was cleaned. The waterfront street offered a great variety of hotels with balconies, restaurants for every taste and many small shops selling local products. Mornings there are many walkers and joggers who run alongside the Playa de Las Canteras, because later it was too lively for these hobbies.

This post shows to You photos from the park Santa Catalina, Playa de Las Canteras, many stand up paddle boarding photos, sand sculptures, Castillo de la Luz, boats on the beach and the sea, life on the beach, cruise and tall ship and much more. On the first weekend there was some festival, which offered hot Samba style music under our balcony – very cool happening.

  1. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary Matti. How nice that you were able to spend the time in Las Palmas in the warmth. I haven’t been there but it looks to be a good place for relaxation and walking. I loved seeing your newspaper clipping of 1969 showing the first Finnair flight there. How times have moved on!

As You saw, we both had or better me good reasons to visit this “underrated” place. Many times it is so that people themselves their vacation pleasant, not only the site where they visit. Our vacation was an active vacation with a lot of walking and visiting some cool places. My three future posts shows that Las Palmas is underrated finally. Ten days including travel days is short, because we did not have time to visit southern parts of the island. Thank You visiting and commenting my post.

      Have a good day!

    Comment by amindfultravellerblog — November 8, 2017 @ 14:10 | Reply

    • Hello Lorelle.

Thank You. Canary Islands consists of 13 islands of which eight are inhabited. They are part of Macaronesia, not Micronesia. Others are Madeira and Azores. We have been in Tenerife (Canary Islands), Madeira and Azores. Madeira is island of flowers in early spring and Azores, which are volcanic. The island of São Miguel was awesome I have one photo about among my About-me photos. One week there is enough, but exploring the island is rewarding.

We tried to solve from our balcony what those Ladies were playing and you solved. Thank You.

  19. Belated congratulations on your 30th wedding anniversary Matti and Anja! I hope you had a great time on the Island of Gran Canaria, visiting Las Palmas and probably the surroundings, too! Quite comfortable temperatures! 🙂 I hope the nights were not too warm.

Did you recognize some buildings or streets again, Matti? I think a lot of changes might have happened since you spent 4,5 months during your stay in 1969. I enjoyed to discover the rather young Matti from Finland in the newspaper (last photo)!

They offered a considerable and really varied programme during your stay! I was interesting to have a look at the Playa de Las Canteras with beach life and all the paddle boarding guys, then the old Castillo de la Luz and afterwards the sand sculptures! Wow!
When I noticed the cruise liner I remembered having seen the ship at the time when the Celebrity Eclipse left the “Meyer Werft” in Papenburg (Germany) to get to the North Sea. What a laaaarge ship!
Seems you had a nice time – even with Samba style music! ^^
Thanks for telling details of your special vacation and I’m now looking forward to the continuation. Have a nice rest of the week!

Thank You for Your praising comment. Nowadays we build in Turk ships for Meyer Werft. 🙂 Newest will be Mein Schiff 6. I was indeed young when I was working in Las Palmas. I started in Finnair my job in October 6, 1966 and in the beginning of 1969, I was selected to be the represent of Las Palmas and also Tenerife. To take care of Tenerife, I flew between Las Palmas and Tenerife twice a week. Sometimes, I have been thinking why me and found some reasons like being responsible, reliable and used to work independently. Maybe true or not. 🙂

      Have a god day. Matti

Thank You leaving so kind comment. Spending 25 years of marriage in Hawaii, must have been wonderful. When I was young man, I visited twice in Hawaii. At those days to reach it, it was easy from Helsinki, Finland.

Helsinki – New York flight time about nine hours and then direct flight from New York to Honolulu 10 hours! I remember very well the beach of Waikiki, beautiful and the weather mild and Hawaiian Leis at arrival. Do they nowadays distribute Leis for visitors?

      Happy Sunday!

I know very little about the Canary islands, so I found this very interesting. It looks very beautiful (and very warm). Can understand the runners doing their runs in the morning. I hope you had a wonderful anniversary! Las Palmas looks lovely. I enjoyed all the beach pictures, they make me want to splash in the waves. How nice to have summer weather in October! The sand sculptures were very impressive, I wonder how long it takes to create one.
How exciting to have worked for Finnair during that time! I know the anticipation of having a new aircraft, but not at that level!
    Have a nice week.

    Comment by Emily — November 29, 2017 @ 19:47 | Reply

    • Hello Emily.

Regards from shopping in Herttoniemi. I am happy that You left Your praising comment here. When man is retired, he stars to think what I got accomplished in working life. I accomplished one visible thing, which can be seen every day nearly round the world! Next time when You fly, take a look at cockpit and above it, there are two letter. For example ZH. These two letters tell that the registration of airplane is OH-LZH. This can be seen at the rear of airplane. ZH can be seen in front landing gear. Now You ask, why ZH is needed and to whom? Answer is clear. Those people approaching airplane they do not seen which airplane, because before my proposal suggestion, man had to walk on either side of airplane to see the registration.

It was in about in 1974, when I suggested this to Finnair’s technical department. They scrutinized my suggestion and approved it because they had same problem. Thus when thinking I accomplished only one visible thing during my work history which lasted near 40 years in Finnair.

Concerning sand sculptures, to make one can take 4-8 hours. Did You now that In Finland we have excellent sand sculptures which art can be seen every summer, during all the summer, in Lappeenranta. Next summer, You must visit there. Here is link to my post, which offers more links to my sand sculpture posts:

      Sand sculptures 2016.

I have visited the site since 2008. Then in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. This verifies that they are incredible gorgeous.

      Have a good day!

      Comment by Sartenada — November 30, 2017 @ 11:28 | Reply

      • Wow, Matti, that is fascinating!! What a great achievement! I know exactly what you’re talking about because part of my job at the airport was guiding airplanes in to park at the gate. Having the registration on the nose gear is incredibly helpful!

I did not know that there are sand sculptures here. It’s clear that the artists take much pride in their work. I hope to view them next summer.

        Have a lovely weekend!

They are best part of Finland and our traditions. On such a cruise, You can see how wonderful summerhouses there are and Saunas by the lake. We have been on a Cruise in Lappeenranta, but it was before time of digital cameras, so I cannot show to You any photos. This is absolutely my favorite Cruise in Finland, in Mikkeli:
