Thank You to everybody who encouraged my wife and me when moving back to our birth town Helsinki from Mikkeli after 30 years. The move was not a piece of cake. We decided to pack all those things, which fit to our (2) cars and bigger objects to transport by a van. This meant that we made 15 one-way trips between Mikkeli and Helsinki. The distance is 248km / 154mi and multiplied by 15, we drove 3720km / 2311mi and all these in three weeks.

Congratulations! 😉 You made it! Matti, I hope you and Anja will have time to recover from the big effort. Glad to hear that you managed such a lot of car trips between Mikkeli and Helsinki. Enjoy your new home! After a while all the still remaining things will find their final place.

Thank You for Your kind words. I am glad that You left Your comment here. We were lucky, because the weather was mainly sunny and quite warm. When driving to the North it was wonderful to see how to dawn. Many times we joked that all the truck drivers noticed that there we go again one after the other, red wine red and navy blue car. 🙂 Anja sold her car to my son after the move, because in Helsinki there is no use for two cars. It served nearly 14 years without any problems. Sigh.

I can’t help grinning a bit. Renting a storage space in the neighbourhood you would have been able to transport all in a moving van and saved yourself a lot of travelling, not to mention gasoline! 🙂
I have had one good rule in life:
Things you haven’t touched in a year – throw it away! You’ll probably never be touching it again later anyway!

Well we had to live in our old home until our brand new was ready in Helsinki. In Mikkeli, there was no storage (small town) and think double work: to move all to a storage and then again move them to Helsinki. Our gasoline costs were 740€ for two cars. In Finland, we are used to drive long trips, so driving was no problem, but a great fun after all because we love driving. When our Mikkeli home was empty, we started to sell it. Thumps up!
Our new home, although it is in Helsinki, is surrounding by pines and rocks. Trip to the center of Helsinki takes less than half an hour. 🙂

I ment ‘storage space’ in Helsinki!
Then you’d have one ‘long haul’ and dozens of short ones inside of Helsinki (when you had the time)?
If one doesn’t throw things away, it will amount to ‘truck loads’ as times go by 🙂

Yes, we have lived already since September 27th in our new home when we got keys of our new home and partly in our old home when packing. Some nights we spent on the floor in our old home while packing for next day. 🙂 Thank You.

Thank You. My tip for Your move is. Start throwing away things, which You have not used for years. We are still doing it. Next time when You buy a new thing to Your home, throw away one thing at same time. In Finland, we have saying: “things have the tendency to fill the empty space”. This applied for us. 🙂

Books? Never throw away a book! You can eventually give them to a local bibliotheque or (if in english) it is possible to give it to an humanitarian association for the less fortunate.
You did a huge trip back and forth… a little rest is now important!

Hi Marion.
Thank You. We are happy in our new home. It is situated only 30 minutes from the Centre of Helsinki by bus and Metro. Buses go frequently, every ten minutes. The view from our Windows show rocks and pines. We have made already some walking tours and found our surroundings interesting and beautiful. Sea is at the walking distance with view of Helsinki. In 2018, they start to build the bridge between (Finland longest bridge) Helsinki and our home. Then we can travel by tram directly or to walk / bike to the center. Matti.

Thank You. Yes, packing unpacking and placing items take lot of time. We threw away quite much things, which did not need during last four years. 🙂
