In English:

In This post I present my home town Mikkeli (number of inhabitants 54 500) seen from its dominating observation tower called Naisvuori. Naisvuori freely translated in English means feminine hill. According to the tales it got its name when women climbed to the hill to watch the Battle of Porrassalmi in 1789. Because the height of the hill is 43 meters / 141 feet from the Lake Saimaa, there might have had the possibility to hear gunshots and to see smoke of gunshots.

We climbed to the hill using stairs of the rocky outcrop. Photos from 12 to 29 are from the top of the observation tower. In photos 16 and 17 You see the bridge which we use to walk / bike / drive to the center of Mikkeli. The photo number 18 shows the residential where we live. It is the most beautiful area in Mikkeli just beside the Lake Saimaa. From there our walk to the center of Mikkeli takes only 25 minutes but in winter the ice road on the frozen lake of Saimaa shortens the walking distance with 10 minutes. Last photos show the observation tower area in fall colors including one winter photo.

As You see in my photos Mikkeli is beautiful town which hides its faces between trees.

  8. Mikkeli looks great from above! I have never really spent much time there, just a short stop on our way to the North. I wish it was summer now – t-shirts and flowers, looks lovely.

    Comment by Suvi — April 27, 2016 @ 09:39 | Reply

    • Hello Suvi.

Thank You visiting my blog and leaving Your kind comment. Mikkeli is small, but there in one place, where You should visit. It is Kenkävero old vicarage. It is just opposite of our home on the other side of the Lake Saima. There are many happening during summer, gorgeous boutique and flower garden. I have made many posts from there. On my side, there is beautiful nature path, which follows the lake. The route is about two kilometers long. Best area for a visit when stopping, is Emola. It is as beautiful as Old Rauma or other old towns on our coastline. Once I mentioned that we will move back to Helsinki next September, which is our birth town. Since last October we started to visit Oulu, where we have our second home in a new house. Trains run to there from Helsinki in about six hours. Many years we though that, shall we buy a mobile home or what to do, because we love those landscapes in the Northern regions.

      Have a great day!

It is beautiful town and it is by the lake, which means that boating is very popular at this area. For example, the Lake Saima is only 20 meters from my home. In summer, it is nice to sit on our balcony and to look how different boats pass by our home. Thank You.

  28. What a great view from the top of the hill! It’s a nice reward for climbing, isn’t it? ^^ The colourful flowerbeds on the way to the top of Naisvuori are looking friendly and inviting. Matti, I now have a better impression of some sizes (town itself and lakes as well) and of the green landscape in general with its huge amount of trees. The large bridge crossing the water illustrates perfectly the dimensions of the lake. Thanks for showing!

But I just read in the comments that you’re planning to move and to go back to Helsinki in autumn? I hope you will find a way to have both then – part of the time the city and its surroundings as well as the possibilities a city is offering to its inhabitants and part of the time the North with its gorgeous landscape and its silent moments. Oulu is a nice town to be in this case, as I learnt from your previous posts and photos.
Coming back once again to your today’s photos I still would like to complete what was said by telling you that I really love the colours of the autumn leaves! Beautiful, like someone switched on the light!

Have a nice weekend and till soon!
    Michèle

    • Hello Michèle.

Thank you very much for Your comment. Our life will change indeed staring next October, when we will move to a brand-new apartment house and returning to our birth town after many decades. Spending so long time outside Helsinki has enriched and expanded our life giving a wider perspective. We are grateful about all that life has offered to us.

Last summer I sold my late father’s summer place on countryside, which we took care during quarter of century. During these 25 years, we had concrete touch about nature, although it was some kind of “labor colony” in bleak conditions, but we loved it and we have many lovely memories there. After selling it, we started to think what now. We had two possibilities, to buy a mobile home or a vacation home. We decided to vacation home in Oulu, because its price was in the same price category than the mobile home. It is brand-new and its size small, having only living room with kitchen, one bedroom and walk-in wardrobe. In Finland new apartments has sauna of course. The best part of this apartment has its glazed balcony. Its size is 12 square meters. Fifth floor offers unobstructed view to the south. When we get too old to visit there, we have possibility to sell it. Nowadays the trend among people is to buy second homes more and not vacation cottages by the lake.

Moving to Helsinki offer to us better possible to visit abroad more frequently and vacation home offer great possibilities to visit Lapland very easily.

      Have a great day!

  29. What fine weather you were having when most of these photos were taken Matti. Mikkeli has a very beautiful setting, beside the lake, and in the countryside. It looks to be a very modern town. Is there a historic centre, with the church perhaps, or is it all new? You’re right – the area where you live beside the lake is the prettiest part! I see you’re going back to Helsinki. I hope the move goes well. I think there will be lots of different opportunities for photos there, but I hope you’ll still be able to get out into the countryside as often as you like. Hope your weather is now warming up for spring.

    • Hello Janice.

So wonderful comment. Thank You. Mikkeli has beautiful cathedral. Personally, I love its glass paintings telling local history.

      Cathedral of Mikkeli .

I will have possibilities to visit countryside many times, because our future home is surrounded by trees even it is in Helsinki. Until now, I have 24 posts presenting Helsinki and more will come of course.

      Have a nice day!

        • Move is big Project and that is why we will start backing one month before moving there. The area, no name now, is walkable and bikable having bus and metro connections to the center.

  32. There is your town in a forest and is beautiful at all. Miki-shi(三木市) is a town among low hills.
A heart is excited in the season when various flowers bloom. The maypole would be gorgeous. Which way is more lively than a summer solstice festival?
It was hot and became 30 ℃ for these past several days.

    • Hello Medaka4841.

Thank You. Yes, Mikkeli is surrounded by Waters and forests. The maypole is popular in some parts of Finland, but the most popular is bonfire. Some years ago, we made a cruise on a lake (cruses on lakes are very popular in Finland) and then we saw bonfires. Here is my post:

      Midsummer cruise.

The real summer is yet to come, but some days we have had about 20 ℃, which is not so much, but enjoyable.
