  5. It’s so beautiful! I put Finnland on my to travel list! Is Summer a good time to come and visit?

    Comment by utesmile — October 26, 2015 @ 10:48 | Reply

    • Hi Ute.

Thank you. Yes, summer is good time for a visit. In Finland, “tourist / real” summer is from June to mid-August. From mid-August to mid-September is ideal for visiting our Lapland, which is the northernmost area in Finland. “Hottest” month is July, but often in August there is Indian summer. May is many times cool, which means that it there can be warm, but it is not guaranteed.

Finns are mainly on vacation from Midsummer to the first week of August. Then the majority of tourist come from Europe in August. Our personal favorite time to spend holiday is between the second week of august and second week of September.

If You are interested to see midnight sun, then visit Lapland in midsummer. We have excellent bus and train connections, but to make a road trip is the best.

      Happy new week.

      • Thanks for this, love to see and experience the midnight sun! August should be good then! I am usually off then! Yay

        Comment by utesmile — October 26, 2015 @ 11:40 | Reply

        • Ute,

In Nuorgam, the sun is above the horizon continuously from May 16 until July 29 or 74 days. This means that nights are yet white in August and sun is nearly visible at midnight. Nuorgam, how it looks like and where it is:

          Nuorgam, Finland.

From Finland it is possible to make a road trip to:

          Road trip to Nordkapp.I recommend.

This is the Southernmost place where to see midnight sun in Finland.

          Aavasaksa hill

          Welcome.

    Comment by mvschulze — October 26, 2015 @ 14:10 | Reply

    • Hello mvschulze.

One could easily pass one week on this area exploring it by car. There are three towns, Savonlinna, Lappeenranta and Mikkeli surrounding it. My favorite town of those is Savonlinna with its Medieval castle of St. Olaf’s Castle The best thing is to cruise on this area onboard of some old, more than 100 years old, steam ships. Thank you commenting.

Many Finnish immigrants searched in the “New World”, places which alleviated their yearning for old homeland. Btw, I have huge amount of photos from Pohjanmaa (Ostrobothnia) presenting beautiful bell towers, churches, Poor-man statues, memorials etc. If You remember the town / village, which You know, then it might be possible to find some photos from my blog. • Hi Tiny.

Thank You for Your visiting and commenting my blog. Well, You are right about autumn colors. Last week we drove from Mikkeli to Oulu (455 km / 283 mi) and we saw that more than half of leaves have fallen from trees. I can imagine that in the south on coastal line there are yet leaves on trees. When looking out of our window this Monday morning, no leaves on trees.

In Oulu the weather was cold and windy. Temperature was -3.0ºC / 26.6ºF. This morning according to our smart phones in Oulu the temperature was 6ºC / 42.8ºF, but in Mikkeli 4ºC / 39.2ºF. If You are gonna drive, then winter tires are must, but not officially obligatory. Welcome.

Have a great start of new week.

    • Hello Anna.
      .
Well, in four languages since two years, in three since 2009 and in English only about three posts. I know these languages, but the old proverb says: “doing is learning”. I understand also German and Swedish, but not enough to blog in them.

Have a great start of new week.

  43. I went to Finland in July’2013 (summer) and then Jan’2015 (winter). I think I have to go again someday in autumn to do some hiking…

    • Hello Kimberley.

Very interesting to read Your comment. Twice in Finland! Many are afraid of winter, because it is cold. Did You visit in the North? My favorite places in winter are these two:

      World’s Biggest Snow Castle.

      Arctic Circle in winter.

Snow castle will be opened in late January and The Arctic Circle is at its best since January to Mid-March. Personally, we love to those Northern parts between late August and Mid-September. There are gorgeous nature at those days when hiking on Arctic Fells where reindeers roam around. I have many posts from there.

      Have a nice day!
