Conquest of hill and Roundpole fence / Conquista de la colina y la valla tradicional / Conquête de la colline et barrière traditionnelle / Conquista da colina e cerca tradicional

In English:

It was sunny day when we decided to “conquest” a small hill called Neitvuori which is freely translated “Maiden hill”. Its peak rises 184 meters / 604 feet above the sea level. From its top there is gorgeous view over the lake beneath it. Road trip from Mikkeli takes about half an hour and climbing to the top about 25 minutes. Note, that in some of my photos, You can see reindeer lichen, although Neitvuori in the South!

When we descended back, we stopped for a while to see how traditional fence is erected. There was a group of people who wanted to learn to maintain the tradition of building the roundpole fence. The roundpole fence is typical wooden fence made of round poles on countryside in the Nordic countries. When I was young kid there was one near to my home. I loved climbing on it and then jump down.

    • Hi Martina.

Thank you commenting my post and liking my photos. We are in good condition, because we walk daily from 6 to 10 kilometers depending our routes. The fence was typical in older days and it served for cattle to be in corral.

      Happy Thursday!

It is a wonderful scenery that spread forests and water. It is can ask you have to cherish the natural wooden fence.

    • Hello Saganhama.

We live on the area called Lakeland. It means that landscapes vary from forest and lakes. Yes, we cherish old traditions and this was excellent example how to build traditional fence It is interesting to know that by burning poles they last “forever”, so they do not decompose / rot over the years.

    • Hi Polianthus.

Thank You for Your kind comment. We live in Mikkeli, Finland on the area called Lakeland. As the name says, we have beautiful lakes here and there. Many years Finns moved to Minnesota and one reason was the similarity of landscapes. Probably they felt being their old country!

      Have a wonderful day!

      • the moss was a bit of a giveaway that you are in the North the forests – also – but it did look so much like New England (barring the fence post approach) – understand the move to Minnesota -a plus of the US for every people that moved there was a landscape – have a great day too. PS do you make Karelian pastries, are they nice?

Karelian pastries are delicious. My wife does not make, because they need a lot of work, but we buy some every week for our mid-day coffee. How it is possible that You know them? Thank you again.

          • 🙂 really, are they delicious, I came across some in a cookbook “scandilicious” – recipemade from scratch, they sounded more salty than sweet? but maybe I wasn’t concentrating enough. I am an avid reader of obscure cookbooks and not so obscure ones and so I discover interesting recipes :)! thanks for commenting!

                • In my country, we have two main filling. Rice is traditional, but nowadays more popular mashed potatoes. Many people as we, love more rye crust, not the wheat. Rye is healthier than wheat. There are of course other fillings, imagination is free.

Best Karelian pasties are old on market places, not on super markets. Finally, this food is naturally matter of taste.:)

Thank You commenting so nicely. The light is “strange” think in photos. I noticed it in these photos in some of my photos taken on my previous countryside cottage; the greenery is greener than generally it is. I never presented those photos before, because the place was my “secret” recreation place.

  18. That’s a view from the top of the mountain! Wow! I really love the combination of forest and lake and particularly when you get the chance to climb and have such an impressive panorama! Wonderful! Also the vegetation at the hillside.
This type of fence looks rather natural and it’s really a very ancient method when I see that people use stripped off bark to tie parts of the fence to others. Like they built the stilt houses alongside the “Bodensee” or raffs in former times. Very interesting to see your photos, Matti!

    Have a nice week!

  25. Silver moss is wonderful.
It attacked me well I climbed up the fence, and to jump off. The fence is often made with bamboo in Japan.
It seems to be view pigment fine weather to show from the top.
Is it a fjord whether it is a lake?
There is no white birch in the place where I live in.

    • Hello Connie.

You made good question. It is called burl. Unfortunally Wikipedia did not explained it in Japanese, but in English: Burl. It is used to make art object. In My About me, I have one photo about it presenting man’s face with pipe. I hope that this helps. Thank you commenting.

        Comment by betunada — October 8, 2015 @ 21:22 | Reply

  38. What an intriguing look into traditional Nordic fence making! Am I correct in assuming that there are no nails or any other kind of metal used in erecting the fence?

    Comment by Bespoke Traveler — November 20, 2015 @ 01:22 | Reply

    • Hello Bespoke Traveller.

Yes, You are right, no nails, no metal. In the old days people was poor, but very innovative.🙂
