In 2014 we made short (1410 kilometers / 876 miles) road trip in Finland. During five days we saw a lot of things, like churches, Poor-man statues, some towns, old historical wooden houses, sandy beaches, carved bears, aviation museum (already presented), Votive ship etc.
Kalajoki, situated on Western coast, means freely translated mean Fish River. It is a town, but much better it is known for its sand dunes. The popularity of the place means that there is more and more tourism and the supply of holiday accommodation increases every year. The distance between Helsinki and Kalajoki is 548 km / 340.5 mi and between Oulu and Kalajoki is 141 km / 87.6 mi.
2005: I visited Kalajoki for the first time with my son and grandson. 7 photos.
2006: I visited it with my wife when returning to the South from the town of Oulu. 5 photos.
2007: I visited it with my wife again, but this time I participated in OCF (Opel Club Finland) summer party. I also tested a quarter mile competition drive with my new Opel (2007-2013) on Kalajoki airport. 4 photos.
2014: Refreshing memories with my wife. 22 photos.

Durante cinco días vimos un montón de cosas, como iglesias, estatuas de pobre-hombres, algunas ciudades, viejas, históricos casas de madera , playas de arena, osos tallados en madera, un museo del aire (ya presentado), Buques Votivos etc.

2007: Visitaba alli con mi esposa de nuevo, pero esta vez participé en OCF (Opel Club Finlandia) fiesta del verano. También probé la competencia de cuarto de milla con mi nuevo Opel (2007-2013) en el aeropuerto de Kalajoki. 4 fotos.

I am glad that You loved my collection of Kalajoki. The area is big having hotel and small and luxury cabins. Many Finns buy their summer homes from this area. The sand dunes are nice and walking barefoot on them to the sea is an experience. My best memories are from the meetings of Opel Club of Finland and contest of driving quarter mile. It is awesome experience and to meet other persons with same car brand. Thank You for Your comment.

En nuestras islas( sardegna, Sicilia y Elba, por ejemplo) también tenemos muchas playas con flores , pequeñas plantas y arbolitos y yo las adoro!

Kalajoki is surely a nice place but I never had the chance so far to visit it even though it is not that far away from my parents cottage than my old home in Vantaa. I always only heard from friends about it who were there especially for the juhannus celebrations

Ce que j’ aime dans cette ville du bord de mer , c’est que la plage a conservé ,presque, son caractère de milieu naturel . Les petites habitations sont en bois et de modeste dimension. . La vegetation dunaire est respectée et Dieu sait qu’elle est très intéressante .
Toutefois en 2014 je vois des immeubles en béton qui commencent à d’élever. J ‘ espère que ce n’ est pas le commencement de la fin .
Pour la course d’Opel , je suppose que ton épouse était le copilote tenant je roadbook! 🙂

I really don’t know why but strangely enourgh I didn’t expect to see such beautiful sand dunes and lovely beach sections! Lovely in the meaning of soft and charming. I always assumed the coast in the very North had to be rougher or perhaps often with a rather stony ground. But surprise! (I’m glad that I can learn a lot from your blog and your photos, Matti!) On two or tree photos it’s looking even a bit Mediterranian. Perhaps it’s caused by the coniferes on these images.
How long these small wooden pathes are! That’s beautiful!
One picture reminds me of the German Northsea Coast and the North Frisian Islands. The very small ones which are called ” die Halligen”. During high tide a considerable part of island is flooded. Your photo with such a small island looks rather similar.
That was a rather interesting blogpost again! Thanks!

Oh, how nice comment. Thank you. I do not know why this part of Finland is so sandy, but maybe there might be one explanation, because on this area exists post-glacial rebound yet today. In Finland, we have a saying. “Buying the land is worthy, because it is no longer prepared. Nature has a different view about it and prepares it all the time”. 🙂

Thank you for Your comment. Busy – just as us! The beginning of this summer was quite rainy and cool, but now we have had possibility to enjoy sunshine and warm. The “funniest” was again that in the Northernmost part of Finland there was “hottest” day than in the South. August is my favorite month, due to its warm weather and cool nights.

quite a span of time, the transition! (of your visits and your family also). verrrry reminiscent of my recent brief sojourn to the PAC NW coast, as no doubt you’ve noticed. wooden walks, lotsa sand, proximity of the forest, etc. looks real relaxing AND refreshing to be there !
