Neristan Old Town in Kokkola / Neristan Ciudad Antigua en Kokkkola / Neristan Vieille Ville de Kokkola / Cidade Velha em Kokkola

In English:

In 2014 we made short (1410 kilometers / 876 miles) road trip in Finland. During five days we saw a lot of things, like churches, Poor-man statues, some towns, old historical wooden houses, sandy beaches, carved bears, aviation museum (already presented), Votive ship etc.

Neristan is a quarter in Kokkola (in Swedish Gamlakarleby) on the Western coast of Finland. Its population is 47377. The town is bilingual, 84,2 % speaks Finnish, 13,5 % speaks Swedish and 2.3 % speaks other languages. The distance between Helsinki and Kokkola is 488 km / 303 mi and between Oulu and Kokkola is 200 km / 124 mi.

The name Neristan comes from Swedish “ner i stan” meaning Lower town. Neristan is charming wooden houses area. Many houses are modernized, but some houses need reparation. We made a Sunday walk around in Neristan and found it worth for tourists which visit Kokkola. After photos I give links to my other Old Towns with wooden houses in Finland.

  1. We live in the wooden house, but am most suitable for hot summer in Japan.
How about a climate of Finland?

    • Hello Wakasahs15th.

Thank You for commenting. Wooden houses in Finland are not hot in summer, but summers are not hot in Finland, but they are warm. This summer it has been quite cool, only few warm / hot days. Our winters are cold or mild, depending where man lives, in the south or in the north.

In our wooden houses, we have triple glass windows and there are some technics in window to keep the heat outside of houses. Our summer weather varies generally between 20°C – 30°C during summer. Our hottest temperature has been 37,2 °C and coldest -51,5 °C.

    • Hi Martina.

Thank You for your comment. Well, it was Sunday, sunny afternoon, many people enjoy their vacation and that is why there are not many people on streets. I think that this old song from 1966 describes best the feeling we got when walking on the streets of Neristan:

      Lazy Sunny Afternoon.

      Have a nice day!

  20. I enjoy travelling around Finland with you! These are beautiful photos! I noticed that several houses had lovely old natural stone foundations – this is common on old buildings here too, and it’s so lovely the way the stones are fitted together like puzzle pieces.

    Comment by Ann — August 8, 2015 @ 15:37 | Reply

    • Hi Ann.

Thank you for your kind comment and making observations. Stone foundations or nowadays using concrete in different way in detached houses is “must” if man wants good ventilation against the mildew and to prevent humidity. In addition, mechanical ventilation round the year is gaining foothold. This way done houses are healthy houses.

It’s very hot here right now. The temperature went up to 38 degrees yesterday in the city I live.
How is the city you live? Please take care of yourself .
    Kiitos 🙂

    • Hi Misa.

You made also nice observation! Because nobody before commented this traffic mirror, I thought that, they must be round the world in general uses. The meaning of traffic mirror is to see round the corner in a bit like periscope operates. Also in Mikkeli, they are in general use. Nice example is when driving to the street from garages or from carports, the driver caan see if there are bikers, walkers or approaching cars on the road. 🙂 ありがとう!

    • Bonjour Suzanne et Pierre.

Old towns are appreciated in Finland and mainly they are situated on our western and southern coastal lines Thank You for your kind comment.

      Have a nice day!

  25. It looks like a nice old town. How old is it/the houses here??

    • Hi Truels.

Thank you. Translated from Wikipedia: “Most of the buildings in Neristan are 1810-1880 centuries, although the oldest buildings are up to the 1600s”. Therefore, they are old. 🙂

      Happy Sunday!

    • Hi Davinder.

Small can be beautiful. 🙂 Alongside the coast of Finland, old, historic buildings are worth for a visit in many small towns. Thank You commenting this post.

      Have a wonderful day!
