Church of Muhos / Iglesia de Muhos / Église de Muhos / Igreja de Muhos

In English:

In 2014 we made short (1410 kilometers / 876 miles) road trip in Finland. During five days we saw a lot of things, like churches, Poor-man statues, some towns, old historical wooden houses, sandy beaches, carved bears, aviation museum (already presented), Votive ship etc.

Our first stop was in Muhos. Finns know very well Muhos due to our first Miss Universe from 1952 Armi Kuusela.
In this post I present the church of Muhos, which is from 1634. It is the oldest wooden church in regular use around the year. The paintings in the sacristy by Emanuel Granberg are “must see”. Those paintings are painted directly on the walls. The hymn board from 1828 with skillfully carved ornaments is also worth for seeing. Poor-man statue of Muhos was presented November 6, 2014. Now You can see it in its home environment. The canopy is assumed to be from Germany from Thirty Year´s War (1618-48).

I love these delicate coloured walls and notice how everything looks neat and precise…
Also love the “frescos”, painted directly on wood , and the sculptures that decorate the church.

      • I love those old churches. In Kauhajoki used to be also a wooden church but it burned down during my mothers youth and was replaced by a huge moden structure. At Nummijärvi, where we have our cottage, they also still have a wooden church. Sadly, I never traveled much within Finland so I mostly know those places in Etelä-Pohjanmaa

    • Hello Watayuki.

Thak You for your prising comment. Yes indeed we enjoy very much the summer solstice. Today for example sun sets in Muhos at 23.56 and in Mikkeli, my home town, at 22.51. Sun rises in Muhos at 2.34 and in Mikkeli at 3.28. Nights are short. Many tourists have problems to sleep in the North where there are white nights.

Well, on countryside people visit churches more often than on towns. I have not statics of course, but during ten and half years visiting nearly everywhere in Finland and shooting photos from about 440 churches, we saw how many people went to church before divine service on Sundays! Churches were chock-full! This has been reason why we could not visit inside many churches. Thank You.

    • Hi again Betunada.

Well, I did not intended to say in one day. We had nice stops, which I will present later. In my old day I have driven as many other Finns direct from

      Saariselkä to

      Helsinki.

The distance is 1085 km / 674 mi. My longest trip in one day is 1350 km / 834 mi when I was then young. It took, if I remember correct, 22 hours. Roads in Finland are not so excellent, especially in the North. Can You imagine that my car with I drove it was one liter car called Datsun 100A from the year 1976. It had 59 horses!!!
