This year I wanted to visit again World’s biggest Snow Castle because it celebrated its twentieth anniversary. This was my fifth visit and every time it amazes me. Where is this castle? It is situated in the small town called Kemi by the sea. To reach Kemi there is flight and train connections from the South. Also there are connections from Rovaniemi (Arctic Circle) by train and bus. The distance between Kemi and Rovaniemi is only 117kilometers / 72miles. The distance between Helsinki and Kemi is 712 kilometers / 442.4 miles. In Kemi the Snow Castle is situated one kilometer from the town center, in the inner harbor area of Kemi.
Every winter Snow Castle must be rebuilt and every year it has a new theme. This year’s theme was Finnishness. Inside the castle this means that snow art on the walls presented for example scenes from the Kalevala, which is the national epic.
So what to see in the Snow Castle? There is Snow Restaurant, Ice Bar, Snow Chapel and Snow Hotel. On Castle’s courtyard there is Snow Slide for children. In a separate building there is a cafeteria. Inside it is nice to warm up and relax enjoying some nice drink. In the nearby building there was an exhibition of twentieth anniversary of the Kemi Snow Castle. I have permission to show scenes how the Snow Castle was built. Original photos took photographer Timo Laapotti who has photographed Snow Castle since 2006. My four photos which I took from his photos, I present here with his permission. Thank You Timo.
Marriages are made possible in the chapel. Many couples come around the world to marry in Snow Chapel. I think that memories stay long time in their minds! What about to stay overnight in Snow hotel, must be on many people’s lips. Man is not freezing inside, because sleeping bags are excellent. The inside temperature in rooms is -5°C / 23°F regardless of the outside temperature. When I was in Kemi, the temperature was 1°C / 33°F! This means that outside weather was warmer than inside. There are 48 beds in different size of rooms. I have photos from Snow hotel’s rooms to get better idea what they look like.

Los matrimonios son posibles en la capilla. Muchas parejas vienen alrededor del mundo para casarse en la capilla de la nieve. Creo que los recuerdos se quedan mucho tiempo en sus mentes! ¿Si se pudiera pasar una noche en el hotel de la nieve? debe estar en boca de muchas personas. En el interior no se congela, porgeque los sacos de dormir son excelentes. La temperatura en el interior en las habitaciones es -5 ° C / 23 ° F, independientemente de la temperatura exterior. Cuando visitaba en Kemi, la temperatura era de 1 ° C / 33 ° F! Esto significa que el clima era más cálido fuera que dentro. Totalmente hay 48 camas en habitaciones de diferentes tamaños. Je pense que les souvenirs restent longtemps dans leur esprit! Pourquoi ne pas rester une nuit à l’hôtel de Neige, ça doit être sur les lèvres de beaucoup de gens. On ne gèle pas à l’intérieur, parce que les sacs de couchage sont excellents. La température à l’intérieur des chambres est de -5 ° C / 23 ° F peu importe ce que soit la température extérieure. Quand je étais à Kemi, la température était de 1 ° C / 33 ° F! Il ya 48 lits dans des chambres de taille différente. J’ai pris des photos de chambres de l’hôtel de neige pour obtenir une meilleure idée de ce qu’ils ressemblent.

C’est MA-GNI-FI-QUE merci pour la découverte et la visite. J’en avait entendu parlé à la télé mais c’est trop beau avec tes photos. Bravo aux artistes qui le construisent tous les ans. On voit bien que tu aurais bien passé une nuit avec ta femme dans ces lits;-) En France dans la vallée blanche près du mont Blanc il y a la grotte de glace sous le grand glacier j’y suis allée, ils sculpte la glace et il y a aussi des lumières pour éclairer la glace de toutes les couleurs mais c’est pas aussi joli que ce château. Et en prime ce superbe coucher de soleil.

I am glad that You visited the castle thru my photos. Thank You. Yes, of course there are toilets and clean ones! They are in the same red building where the cafeteria is. The building can be seen in the second and third photos at the other end of the building having the text: “Courtyard, patio, cour, pátio”.

the snow castle is simply amazing, what a work of art!!! I love the roses in the ice, so romantic, but I would never be brave enough to sleep in the hotel rooms: sooooooo coooold!!! The pictures of Kemi are beautiful too, with such a beautiful light.

Summer is okay. I do not recommend May, it is sometimes cold. The real summer comes in June. In July Finns are on vacation, because the weather is sunny mostly and “warm”. Personally I prefer August, because yet warm, sometimes “Indian summer” surprises and September is ideal for visiting the Arctic Circle and to travel to the North of it. During Midsummer there are no night in the North, such an experience. In summer it is nice o cruise on some of our lakes.

Every bit of the castle is amazing! The idea is bold and a wonderful celebration of the snow and cold that help make life on this earth possible. The art is exquisite and the scope of the whole thing is incredible. Its creators are master planners and builders. The inside temperature in rooms is -5°C / 23°F regardless of the outside temperature. Snow is cold, it is true to us also. When winter starts we shiver from the cold, but slowly get accustomed to it. Thank You visiting my blog and leaving Your kind comment.

I don’t think at all that I’ll be disappointed! Never! As you know it always depends on so many other circumstances too how the quality will turn out! Light, Distance, Motion etc. Most of my own photographs are only mediocre (not the sharpness or the colourfulness of those presented in your blog – even taken with your older cameras!) as I still only use a compact camera and often there’s no other possibility as to take quick and spontaneous snapshots. No chance for a retry. I think it doesn’t really matter if you want to show a very special moment or occasion.
I will estimate your further blogposts as before! That’s for sure! 🙂

Yes, You can stay in ice hotel, because the inside temperature in rooms is -5°C / 23°F regardless of the outside temperature. You do not shiver from cold, because it is arranged so, be sure. Every room have well-equipped sleeping-bags and good beds! ありがとうございます.

bonjour mon ami, quel beau château de neige c’est vraiment magnifique je n’en avais jamais vu comme çà et surtout bravo aux artistes qui ont fait et qui font chaque année ce magnifique travail. Your photos, as always, are stunning. We will have to look at the Kalevala snow reliefs with some of our pupils. It will be quite exotic for the children from other parts of the world to see the snow castle.

Wow, you have a really wonderful photo collection here!! And I’m sure this article and all the translations took you lots of time – respect!! I’ve been at the Kemi Snow Castle back in 2011 when everything was based on the comic theme; I loved it! It’s really cool to see what they made of it this year, seeing an important part of the Finnish culture coming “to life”. I especially like the replica of the Northern Lights and the wolves! ❤

These are great photos Matti. I have seen photos before from one of your previous Ice Castle visits. We also visited an Ice Hotel in Alta, Norway, and I’ll be putting a few photos on my blog before too long. I found the different light quite challenging to photograph. Your castle is much bigger and much grander than the one we went to.

Thank You. I have never stayed there inside, because to me “too expensive”. 🙂 The opening time of Snow Castle is quite short, starting generally from the last week in January and ending in April one week or ten days. Best time to visit are in February and March, because then there is snow surely.

In Kemi, there is one more experience: To cruise on icebreaker Sampo. I have a dreamt to make it some winter.
Good planning is important. For example yesterday here in Oulu where we stay, there were reindeer riding contest. It is every winter at same time, but for us it was the first time. In Lapland thee is possible to see Northern lights also. If any help needed do not hesitate to ask. Matti.

Thank You praising this unique castle. We have visited it during many years and every winter it offers surprises with its snow and ice sculptures. Next winter we will visit it again in February and possibly the Arctic Circle also. February is the best winter month for winter visits. Matti

You are lucky to live so close to these beautiful spots, although I must admit that the weather will probably not suit me at all. I get unhappy very quickly when it’s cold, but now I can happily page through your photos to enjoy the sights 🙂

Good Morning Hester.
Thank You for Your thoughts. I do not love cold, but when living here, I have to endure it. Happily, there are excellent warm cloths. In the fact cold weather is not so bad, but the cold wind. Before going out, we always check from our phones the temperature and the real feel. One example. Temperature -2 ℃, but real feel – 9 ℃. Our summer is short, but beautiful. Temperature varies between 20 up to 32 and sometimes to more, depending if You are in the south or in the north.
