Day7 (Thurdsay, September 05, 2013). Distance: Round trip 71km / 41.4mi. Temperature: morning 7.0ºC /44.6ºF and evening 19ºC / 66.21F. Route: Muonio-Pallastunturi-Muonio.

Today we decided to hike. Our target was to conquer the Arctic Hill called Palkaskero. The lenght of the route is only 7.5 kilometers / 4.7 miles and the rise to the top is 240 meters / 787.4 feet. Sounds again easy again. In Finnish we have a word “Rakka” which means craggy outcrop of rock on the summit of a hill or on its slopes. When You see my photos then You understand the meaning of “Rakka” and why it took 2.5 hours to hike this route including coffee pause on the hilltop.

This small hike was worth doing although the wind was so strong that the hair loss was close to both of us.

Hoy decidimos ir de excursión. Nuestro destino era conquistar la colina Ártico llamado Palkaskero. El largo del recorrido es de sólo 7,5 kilometros / 4,7 millas y la subida a la cima se encuentra a 240 metros / 787.4 pies. Suena muy fácil de nuevo. En Finlandia tenemos una palabra “Rakka”, que significa promontorio escarpado de roca en la cumbre de una colina o en sus laderas. Cuando Usted ve mis fotos entonces entiendes el significado de “Rakka” más mejor y por qué se tardó 2,5 horas para caminar penosamente esta ruta incluyendo pausa café en la cima de la colinidea.

Esta pequeña caminata valía la pena hacerlo, aunque el viento era tan fuerte que la pérdida del cabello era cerca para nos ambos.

Aujourd’hui nous décidions de faire une randonnée. Notre objectif était de conquérir la colline de l’Arctique appelé Palkaskero. La longueur de l’itinéraire est à seulement 7,5 km / 4,7 miles et la montée vers le sommet est de 240 mètres / 787,4 pieds. Sonne de nouveau facile. En finnois, nous avons un mot “Rakka” qui signifie éperon escarpé du rocher sur le sommet d’une colline ou sur ses pentes. Quand vous voyez mes photos alors vous comprenez le sens mieux le mot “Rakka” et pourquoi il a fallu 2,5 heures pour faire ce parcours, y compris pause-café sur la colline.

Cette petite randonnée en valait la peine même si le vent était si fort que la perte de cheveux était proche de nous les deux.

Hoje decidimos caminhar. Nosso alvo era conquistar a Colina do Ártico chamada Palkaskero. O comprimento do percurso é de apenas 7,5 km / 4,7 milhas e a ascensão ao topo é de 240 metros / 787,4 pés. Soa novamente fácil. Em finlandês, temos uma palavra “Rakka”, que significa afloramento rochoso de rocha no cume da colina ou em suas encostas. Quando você vê as minhas fotos, então você entende o significado de “Rakka” e por que demorou para nós 2,5 horas para caminhar essa rota incluindo pausa café no topo da colina.

Esta pequena caminhada valeu a pena, embora o vento era tão forte que a perda de cabelo estava perto de nós dois.

  5. I love the photos that you share – I find the scenery very interesting in that it resembles the highest areas of the Colorado Rocky Mountains and Glacier National park in Montana – just the highest of the alpine area in those parks – I always find the air very thin there and a little harder to breath when we hike. the trails there though are very short and steep

      It really was. We were lucky with the weather, because no rain. The day before leaving the Muonio area there was quite heavy fog and it was just that day which we selected to crown our final hike. Photos can be seen in post number 11. Thank You commenting.

      Yes it was hard, especially when descending down from the top we had to be very careful. That we “conquered” this arctic hill was victory to us. Thank You for Your comment.

  8. Although the hike was not as easy at it seemed it would be, I’m sure you found it very worthwhile in spite of the high wind. The scenery is fantastic, and the view from the top is beautiful. Thank you for taking us along with you.

      We made this road trip during off-season. Next week would have been better to shoot fall photos indeed, but it was our decision to select this week. Next week our Portuguese course started and thus it was not suitable. Yes, I always avoid shooting photos from another people and if it is not possible, I shoot photos from behind or from a distance. This hiking area is huge and there are so many tracks that people just “vanish” in the terrain. In my future post number 11, there are some people, but not identifiable. Think about it, if someone would be a hiking with a lover, and would be identified thru my photos.

  12. The rocky terrain must have made that a very tough hike, but the views are incredible! And with nothing to stop the wind I can imagine you might have to tie your hair down!

  16. Loved the pictures, what views. I see the habit of building cairns is international, I loather them but others don’t! Here in Austria we’re waiting for the snow to melt, the skiers to go home and we can have our mountains back to ourselves for walking!

      Thank You. Cairns would have many stories to be told, if we could understand them. They know the history of our globe, much better than we. The winter here has been “warm” and short. Soon birches got small leaves and then summer is close.

Does it only seem to be colder as during the days before (which you have shown in the former parts)? May be it’s only due to the height of the hill Palkaskero or caused by the very strong wind.

      Thank You for Your praising comment. In Autumn weather can change “quickly” and very much. One must remember that the Arctic Sea is not so far away from these regions and also Gulf Stream. Gulf Stream brings warm weather to the whole Scandinavia. Those weather figures are from Anja’s notebook. The wind has great effect indeed how cold we feel the weather. Here in the Southern Finland we always look the official temperature and the real feel of temperature before going out. The difference can be very much in winter time.

      Thank You for Your kind comment and praising our health. Yes, indeed. The main secret is to walk, walk and walk!!! We love walking all the year round and also cycling in summer. Last year we walked 1267 km / 787 miles. Last March 163 km / 101 miles. The amount varies due to how busy we are and due to the weather. On cold weather it is sometimes “difficult” to go out, we need to pull ourselves together and go out

  28. Very nice pictures Matti. At first glance, it almost has a type of desert feel to it as it is so barren, yet the bushes and some trees are colorful, so soon it became evident it was not desert-like at all. This is a wonderful collection of photos of hiking and you are very high up, judging from the view below. Once again I liked the little sidewalk of wood to walk on … very skinny and narrow. Very interesting and I like how you got the destination signs at the very end. I like that little touch.

      Thank you for your praising comment. Man have to remember that these Arctic fells are situated north of Arctic Circle and generally they are 1.6-3 billion years old. We made many road trips nearby to this area from there we made every day another road trip and hiking at the destination.

              • I wonder why that is that it changes from year to year Matti? In my park where I walk daily, I see the trees beginning to turn (likely because it was very chilly last week – uncharacteristic cold for this time of year) … but the same trees, turn the same colors and in the same way each year – the plum trees are last, a dark purple, and they drop their leaves so late, that the leaves often cover the snow.

Summers are warmer, Winters start earlier, last longer – last year we had a very mild Winter, not much snow – my kind of Winter. We can only hope we do not pay the price this year.                     • Linda, climate change is visible here also. Especially this concerns our northernmost part. Winters are no more (hard) winters and the amount of snow is decreasing. This part of Finland is a real winter paradise and it gets visitors especially from Europe. We have world’s biggest snow castle which is visited by the visitors coming round the world. I have made many posts about it during the years. Here is one in which I have collected photos from different years:
