North of Arctic Circle 7 / Al norte del Círculo polar ártico 7 / Au nord du Cercle Arctique 7 / Ao norte do Círculo Polar Ártico 7

In English:

Day 5 (Tuesday, September 03, 2013). Distance: Round trip 234km / 145.4mi. Temperature: morning 6.ºC / 42.8.4ºF and evening 14.5ºC / 58.1F. Route: Sonkamuotka-Enontekiö-Hetta-Kaaresuvanto-Muonio.

After seeing in my previous post presenting carved animals, we continued our trip to Hetta where is a small hill called Jyppyrä. Its height is 400 meters / 1312 feet above the sea level. Its slopes are steep to climb, but rewarding, because from its top can be seen Pallastunturi-Ounastunturi Arctic hill area.

On the hilltop we enjoyed picnic lunch with some coffee. There we met a nice old couple (both of them more than 80 years old) grilling some sausages. I admired them, because they told us previous day they have driven 13 hours nonstop to visit the area. Our roads in the North are not in as good condition as in the South. In addition to that man must be careful with reindeers, because they do not dodge cars, but cars must dodge them! My hat off. The bird among my photos is called Kuukkeli (Siberian Jay, Perisoreus infaustus). What makes Kuukkeli special, is that it is not afraid of man and comes to visit campfires. When descending, Anja found a lot of blueberries which she “had to” pick up.

En español:

Día 5 (Martes, 03 de septiembre 2013). Distancia: ida y vuelta 234km / 145.4mi. Temperatura: mañana 6.ºC / 42.8.4ºF y por la noche 14.5ºC / 58.1F. Sonkamuotka-Enontekiö-Hetta-Kaaresuvanto-Muonio.

Well, not all the way, but in the North; maybe during last two three hours. Here is my video, well Anja shot videos and I only edited, which shows that man must be careful:

My intention was show it in the last post of this series, but now You can preview it.

My favorite scene in it is when Anja disappears into the fog when hiking on the top of the Arctic Hill.

      Have a great day!

  7. beautiful what more can I say. I always love to look at your photos. I do love your Siberian Jay! In the Western part of the US is a bird called the “Stellar jay” and we love to look at them when we visit that area. In a way the area you visit remind me of the Glacier Montana area and the Yellowstone area of Wyoming

Thank You for Your kind comment. In Finland we have saying: “Age is just numbers“. So I believe that You be hiking when 80. In next May I’ll be seventy. Inside I feel young and my aim the same as You have.

I forgot to say, that there is another saying in Finland: “former young, not old”.

      Happy weekend.

Matti, I would like to thank you very much for mentioning the video! Stunning the see the large number of reindeer, the white ones (!) and the °guy” who went directly on the street when you were approaching and only left the road shortly before your arrived. Or the elk that had a break alongside the street and remained completely unimpressed when you came closer.
Beautiful landscape! And sometimes even a bit misterious when the fog is coming up. It’s strange to see Anja disappearing into the fog. I’m glad that she did not get lost there …^^
Great video! Thanks for showing and sharing!

Glücklich Sonntag! It seems that You loved the video. Thank You watching it. The fact was indeed that we were afraid also to stray in fog. There were also other people, but they were not first-timers and continued their hiking just as it was nothing. What comes to driving, now You understand that man cannot drive there as fast as on “Autobahnen”.🙂

          Happy Sunday!

        Comment by ladyfromhamburg — March 23, 2014 @ 01:29 | Reply

        • Hi Michèle.

Thank You remembering this. It was few years ago when we made again road trip in Germany lasting two weeks as usually. I wanted to “test drive” in Nürnburgring / Nordschleife my electric blue car (Opel Vectra OPC, 280 hp), but it was closed. We arrived on Monday and they said that the track is closed, because previous day there was driving competition and the track clean-up will last all the day. Well, it happens. So, both of us bought jackets from there. Later Anja gave her own jacket to me and that one I wore was thus Anja’s. Mine is intended for more cold. I have been proud to wear it here in Finland.

          Have a great day!

    • Hi Hayley.

Yes, You are right. Once when on the way to Nordkapp, we saw such an accidents and it was not beautiful to look. After that, when driving in Lapland, we both take carefully look at both sides of roads and searching for reindeers. Blueberries are general in Finland and man cat pick up them freely. To find them so late in autumn was a surprise to us. Thank You commenting.

      Happy weekend.

    • Bonjour Isa.

  32. Wow from my crowded streets to your wide open spaces… what a contrast. The views are lovely as are your photos. It reminds me of places in Canada. Especailly the wild blueberries… now that is a must to stop and pick! We used to spend hours picking wild blueberries as a kid. YUM!
Thanks for the visit over at CTB😀 I needed your post today to enjoy the scenery and wide open spaces…. ahhhhh…..

    • Hi CanadianTravelBugs.

Thank You for Your praising comment. I understand very well the difference between crowed towns and the nature. Sometimes it is good for a man visit in the nature; enjoy the “silence” and fresh air.

      Have a great day!

      • Yes the open spaces is very soothing. Can’t wait for summer when we get back to Canada. My brother lives out in the country and there is lots of fields and sky.

  35. Hello in Finnland, I had to smile when I saw the picture where you are grilling some sausages, because we also love to do that and we also enjoy blueberry-picking, we even have a big bush – about three metres high in our garden. I wish you a very good week. Best regards Martina

    Comment by Martina Ramsauer — March 30, 2014 @ 23:05 | Reply

    • Hello Martina.

Thank You for Your comment. It was not me grilling some sausages, but the man about which I told in my text. From our nature people pick blueberries and lingonberries. In the most Northern part we pick also cloudberries. These berries are put into the freezer for the coming winter.

      Have a great new week.

      Comment by Sartenada — March 31, 2014 @ 07:18 | Reply

      • Good morning, you are, of course, right but I like it all the same. The names of your other berries you mention don’t sound familiar to me, despite the fact that I remember having been offered your very special berries when we were there on holiday. I also wish you a very nice spring week:) Best regards
