Day 3 (Sunday, September 1, 2013). Driven 165km / 102.5mi. Temperature at afternoon: 14ºC / 57.2ºF partly cloudy. Route: Muonio-Olos-Pallas-Sirkka. Later we noticed that from Muonio to Pallastunturi it is only 65km / 40.3mi back and forth.

Finally we were ready to explore Lapland. Because we did not have exact idea were to start, we drove around. Happily we drove to the National park area called Pallastunturi and thus we got the first touch with the Arctic Hills. Our first “hiking” lasted about three hours including familiarizing of Visitors center and drinking nice cups of coffee in the “Hotel Pallas” which is next to the Visitors center. Among my photos You can see reindeers roaming around here and there. This was just the start!

Día 3 (Domingo, 01 de septiembre 2013). Manejando 165 kilometros / 102.5mi. Temperatura por la tarde: 14 º C / 57.2 º C. Nublado. Ruta: Olos Muonio-Pallas-Sirkka. Más tarde comprendimos que a partir de Muonio de Pallastunturi la distancia es sólo 65 kilometros / 40.3 mi de ida y vuelta.

Finalmente estábamos listos para explorar Laponia. Porque que no teníamos una idea exacta de dondé comenzar, manejábamos aquí y allá. Afortunadamente manejábamos nuestra carro a la zona del parque nacional llamado Pallastunturi y así recibíamos nuestro primer contacto con los cerros de árticos. Nuestra primera “senderismo” duró cerca de tres horas, incluyendo familiarización del centro de visitantes y bebiendo tazas de café de buen sabor en el “Hotel Pallas”, que está situado al lado del centro de visitantes. Entre mis fotos Vos pueden ver renos deambulando por aquí y por allá. Esto fue sólo el comienzo!

Enfin, nous étions prêts à explorer la Laponie. Parce que nous n’avions pas une idée exacte de l’endroit où commencer, nous avons roulé ici et là. Heureusement, nous avons conduit notre bagnole à la zone du parc national appelé Pallastunturi et ainsi nous avons reçu notre premier contact avec les collines de l’Arctique. Notre première randonnée a duré environ trois heures, compris la familiarisation du centre d’accueil et dégustant savoureuses tasses de café dans l ‘”Hôtel Pallas”, qui est situé à côté du centre d’accueil. Parmi mes photos on peut voir quelques rennes errant ici et là. Ce n’était que à vrai dire le début!

Felizmente nós dirigimos à área do parque nacional chamado Pallastunturi e deste modo nós tínhamos o primeiro contato com os colinas Árticos. Nossa primeira “caminhada” durava cerca de três horas, familiarizando com o centro de visitantes e bebendo umas copos de café com gosto refinado no “Hotel Pallas”, que fica ao lado do centro de visitantes. Entre as minhas fotos Você pode ver renas perambulando aqui e ali. Este foi um bom começo!

  Thank You. As You see it is not just Tundra! I love Your competition to Cairngorms National Park.
  
  At this latitude there are trees in the north, but when climbing the top of the hills, the trees vanish. In the beginning they are scrubby. When climbing up to the top, there are surprises, because there exist huge areas full of sharp rocks. Man must be extremely careful when passing over them. I have in future posts awesome photos presenting them. We had own motto when hiking: “It is better go slowly to the destination, than at high speed by the helicopter to the hospital”.

What beautiful growth midst the “desolation,” Sartenada. I especially love the boardwalks (like we experienced in some boggy areas of Vancouver Island years ago) and, of course, the handsome reindeer! What a grand experience that must have been for you!

  Thank You. This national park is one of the first national parks (established 1938) in Finland and it is the third largest national park in Finland. Generally I avoid shooting photos from other people than us. During the week we saw many busses coming there full of hikers, senior hikers, because the Young one are working. I had to say that many of them, were in better conditions than us!
  
  Actually this was not a hike, just a walk. in the area there are 350 kilometers / 220 miles of marked hiking trails. This tells about its popularity.

  Thank You for Your praising comment. You are welcome! Well, if You visit in Europe then it is easy to reach these areas by plane. From Helsinki there are for example flights to Rovaniemi which is situated at the Arctic Circle. Then hire a car and the adventure starts. The best time for a visit is in the beginning of September, as we did. Of course June, July and Augusta are excellent summer months for visits, but then there are mosquitoes. Some year more or less, it varies.
  
  I suggest to You to check our earlier road trip which we made 2011: Beyond the Arctic Circle1.
  
  It is same kind of road trip, but made in the middle of Lapland continuing to the Northernmost part of Finland and presenting also 3 posts from Norway. Worth for a check.

  Reindeers are shy, but very tame at same time. Sometimes they visit hotel areas also and then man can nearly touch them. Here is excellent example showing reindeers near to a hotel in:

Hello Matti, I’m a bit late this time but fortunately I didn’t miss your 3rd part of the “North of Arctic Circle”. I’m quite impressed to see the quite colourful landscape of Lapland and the areas within the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. I love the white reindeer! How graceful! And how impressive the other one with the enormous horns!

The colors and space in your photos are very beautiful, and this looks like a wonderful place for hiking. The landscape, vegetation, and even the caribou are just like many parts of Alaska!.I also like the video, and it’s interesting that everything about the reindeer is white, even the antlers. Wonderful photographs. The landscape is lovely, peaceful and quiet. The reindeers are awesome creatures! I cannot imagine how they carry such huge racks! Great photos of them too. I enjoyed this view of Fell Lapland!

  Thank You for You praising comment. We spent one week on there are hiking and making road trips, but our base was in Muonio, which nice place to visit everywhere. For hiking, mean day hiking, Pallas-Yllästunturi area are is the best and autumn is ideal.

  You are welcome. I am glad that You put this to Your future travel list. Our base was in Muonio (previous post in this series) from which there is short drive Pallas National park. You need car to drive around to make day hikes. Also train / bus connections without car are possible. When You start to plan trips, contact me, so I can give more detailed tips.
  
  There are other national parks. For example here starts our another road trip in the north:
  
  Beyond the Arctic Circle 2.
  
  This park is my favorite:
  
  Koli national park.
  
  Short cruises in Finland are must. This is my favorite:
  
  Cruise to Rock paintings.

    - You are welcome. Did You know that in our northernmost parts in summer there are no nights, sun is over the horizon! It is incredible experience for a visitor. I collected three links show some where sun never set:
      
      Aavasaksa is the most Southern place where one can admire Midnight sun.
      
      Aavasaksa hill.
      
      Muonio, Our base for hiking. Even in September nights were quite short.
      
      Muonio
      
      Nuorgam, the northernmost village of Finland and the European Union. Here white nights start May 16 and end July 29. This means that white nights last 74 days.

How I would love to hike these trails. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful. I’ve seen photos of reindeer before, but the white one is quite extraordinary.

  No, possibility to get lost, because all paths are equipped with a guide plates. Lapland and Kuusamo are paradise for them who want enjoy fresh air and love walking, hiking and love landscapes. Once we had fog, when we went hiking. At the beginning, it was frightening, but signs helped us to find paths. It is here:
