    • Hi Terry.

      Thank You.

Today we look at noon how the town of Turku declares Christmas Peace. The tradition began already in 1320. It has been seen on television since 1983. It is a tradition which cannot leave without looking at.

Merry Christams to You and Yours.

    • Hello Cocomino.

Thank You. This time my collection consist of our own, my late mother’s and my wife’s late family’s old Christmas cards. In Finland we yet appreciate hand written Christmas cards! The sender must have had made the effort of buying it, writing the Christmas greeting, buy Christmas stamps and finally mailing it. I think that Christmas e-card is too easy to send. Maybe I am old fashioned, but I love real post cards.

Merry Christmas to You and Yours.

  6. Bonjour Matti,

  7. Hi Matti,
Things have been so busy that I’ve been reading your posts but forgot to comment (sorry).
I have a question please: why on some of the cards are there what looks like “three santa’s”?
The cards are beautiful but I have to admit that my heart was completely and utterly stolen by the two children on the sleigh and the little realistic birds!
    Merry Christmas Matti 🙂

    Comment by kiwidutch — December 24, 2012 @ 11:35 | Reply

    • Hello Kiwidutch.

Thank You. Well to answer to Your question there might be two choices.

      1. There are Christmas gnomes which resemble Santa, because they are very old, probably one thousand years old.🙂

      2. Santa is busy, very busy and he needs assistants. Think that he is working every day, yes every day without overtime pay. So, one is Santa and others are Christmas gnomes and finally comes the day when part with Rudolf the Red Nose to distribute Christmas presents.

In Finland Santa visits in every home asking if there are kind children. He also chats with children and let them sing Christmas song. He also dances with them around the Christmas tree. In a family of adults Christmas presents are put under the Christmas tree. So it is my family also. When we come from our Sauna presents are there.

Merry Christmas to You and Yours.

  8. What a great collecton of old cards! I liked all of them, especially: …the little girl pulling her brother on the sled and… the elves peeking through the window and …the children carolers singing to Santa.

        Comment by Mary Gilmartin — December 24, 2012 @ 12:24 | Reply

        • I guess something that kind due to time differences around the world. Half an hour it was declared the Christmas Peace here in the town of Turku. It is not allowed to break at least here in Finland.🙂

Few hours and we’ll get our Christmas presents – books, I guess so.🙂

Thank You for Your comment. So nice to read that there also is the tradition to send real post cards. Well, the number of inhabitants in Finland is about 5.4 millions and in 2011 we sent more than 40 millions Christmas card. The highest number was in 1995 and then the amount was 50 million Christmas cards.

    • Hi Elisa.

Thank You for Your nice comment. Well, in our family we save too many things in our household. About one month ago we moved from our detached house on countryside to an apartment in a town, from a “big” house to much smaller one, which meant that many there were things which we could not to relocate them inside our new home was a “mission impossible”. So, the only thing possible was to sell or to throw away many things.

Merry Christmas to You and Yours.

  27. I absolutely love those cards. How I wish I would have gotten drawn by hand. There were very few. This was the first year I did not send any out as I must admit I have gotten tired of receiving photo cards. I got caught up in that last year when I sent out a photo of santa arriving by canoe that I had photographed myself. Then I thought afterwords no more. Christmas is not the same and I would just assume not get anymore cards.

    Comment by kareninhonolulu — January 2, 2013 @ 04:00 | Reply

    • Hi Karen.

Thank You. Really great comment. Maybe someday people notice that old is beautiful also. Since digital photos arrived it has been too easy to use one’s photos in different articles, like mugs, t-shirts, calendars, stamps etc. Due to that I understand very well that people want to present their own photos or some commercial photos in postcards. We have however to understand that they want all the good to us.

      Happy New Year!

      Comment by Sartenada — January 2, 2013 @ 08:43 | Reply

      • Your right. They are remembering me in the way that they enjoy and I should appreciate that. Just getting old I guess and like so many old people, I long for the old days. Of course I have selective memory and only remember what I liked best.
