Ladies and Gentlemen welcome onboard InterCity 50 train from Kemi to Helsinki.

When returning to my home after photographing the Snow castle in Kemi, I made a test if is it possible to take photos from the train when it is passing on speed of 160 km/ h or 99 miles / h. My photos present life from the plain called Ostrobothnia. Houses which are seen are not rich men’s houses, but they are in many cases poor men’s houses. So this presentation of photos shows the life as it is, not in beautiful coulisses, far away from centers of population.

Señoras y señores bienvenidos a bordo del tren Intercity 50 de Kemi a Helsinki.

Hice una prueba si es posible sacar fotos desde el tren cuando está pasando en velocidad de 160 km / ho 99 millas / h cuando regresé de Castillo de nieve en Kemi. Mis fotos presentan la vida en el llano denominada Ostrobotnia. Casas que se ven no son asas de los hombres ricas, pero en muchos casos son casas de los hombres pobres. muestra la vida, que está muy lejos de los centros urbanos.

J’ai fait un test s’il est-il possible de prendre des photos du train quand il passe à la vitesse de 160 kilomètres par heure ou 99 miles / h quand je suis rentré á Helsinki de Château de Neige en Kemi. Mes photos présentent la vie de la plaine s’appelée Ostrobotnie. Maisons qui sont vues ne sont pas les maisons des hommes riches, mais elles sont dans de nombreux cas, les maisons des hommes pauvres. Donc, cette présentation demes photos montrentá Vous comment la vie est loin des centres urbains.

Just like a Christmas Card (except it lasts longer than Christmas)… It’s beautiful but do people get sick of all that snow eventually? or don’t they mind it because they are used to it?

Well, I think that some are “sick” of snow, cold, dark and too long time lasting winter, as we do, but there might be people who do not care, but this is my speculation only. This is only one side of living here, because one has understand that during summer everything is the other way around, Then the beauty of nature is stinking with white nights, admiring migrating birds, fragrance of flowers, buzzing bees, butterflies, fishing on a lake or rivers, going to swim from own Sauna at lakes etc. Not to forget the beauty of the fall. Maybe these things weight in scale.
  
  I think that in photo 27, there is somebody’s summer cottage beside a small creek. The small building with its chimney at right is very typical summer cottage with one small room and Sauna.

  - Yes , naturally I forgot that whilst Winter is very dark, Summer is light for most of the 24 hour day. Literally from one extreme to another. I wouldn’t mind the summer, daylight at “night time” and all, but I think I would struggle with the extreme darkness of the winter months.

These are wonderful pictures — it’s hard to believe that you got them from a speeding train. The snowscapes are absolutely beautiful. Snow around our home quickly gets dirty and ugly.

  Yes, I really took them from moving train. I checked the speed of shutter from few photos and noticed that it varied between 1/800 seconds – 1/500 seconds. When shooting photos I also set the image stabilization of lens from normal to active. Active takes more power, but it did not matter. It seems that those reflections from window did not disturb so much as I was afraid when in train. The problem to shoot photos to me was that situations came so rapidly that I did not have so much time to think “to take a photo or not to take a photo” as Shakespeare nearly said it. LOL.

A very beautiful set of photos. The trees look wonderful in their white coating, like in number 6. In photo 31, have skiiers come down the bank onto the road or is it a snowmobile? That must have been a very enjoyable train journey.

  Well, I guess when looking at photo 31, that mainly skiers have tested if the ice is enough strong to carry them on this river. I have to say that after flying quite much in my life, I nowadays enjoy train travel too. The day train was with two floors and I took my photos from upper floor in which I had my seat. The night train was developed since 2009, because I had in my cabin also a shower! That’s wonderful.

I couldn’t believe you took these photos from the train.
They look just too good!
Though I can see the light reflections from the train in the first few shots.
Other than those, if you keep quiet, I would be able to spot any differences!

These are wonderful photos of the countryside! I love seeing it, and much of it is not that different from some parts of Montana. It is very beautiful country in the winter and all of the houses show that they are ready for winter conditions.

Beautiful photos and landscape. With so much frost on the trees, it must have been very cold on the days before.
I noticed that apart from the red ones, houses have mostly neutral colours (white, grey, brown…), – there are none of the bright jewel coloured houses that are seen further north, in the arctic areas. (exception in photo 30, which seems to be from a small town)
I have taken lots of photos from moving cars, but only a very few come out good, or tolerably good. It is difficult to avoid vegetation coming in the way of the motifs when sitting in a car. Having a large memory card and good battery is a plus, – then you can just shoot and shoot and shoot LOL 🙂

  Thank You. When there is frost on trees, is not only the cold weather which causes it, but humidity. The humidity is freezing on trees and branches. I had also one more difficulty to take these photos were electric poles. They varied from side to side and sometimes I had to take the photos just after electric pole passed my sight.

Beautiful photos–and quite amazing for being shot out of a moving train. My favorite is 33–between the rustic shed, snow drifts and those tall almost branchless evergreens. That would make a great greeting card!

Good morning Matti,
I especially like to welcome the first sentence in the text. All photos are interesting and very beautiful. It is hard to believe that the landscape during the rapid speed of the train, photographed through that window. The snowy landscape conveys peace, harmony and a little Christmas spirit. The frost in the trees looks fantastic. The simple architecture of the houses like it very much. In Figure 20 I like the design of the house. The two small square windows look like eyes beneath the pediment. The house has a face. I would be interested in how the rooms are heated in these houses? I try to imagine that they are heated with stoves and wood. Is it so? Above all, I imagine it difficult, in the snow, away from the city by car to drive. Here I would like to drive a husky sled or horse-drawn sleigh through the countryside and enjoy everything. I am grateful for that I got to experience this little photo journey and look forward to the next series and your return. Thank you for all your nice comments and stars under my photos in my blog.   How houses are warmed? Well, there are mainly two ways to do so. 1. By oil. 2. By wood in fireplaces and electricity. We warm our house by electricity and our fire lace is so called capacitive fireplace. It means that when I burn wood in fireplace, it will give warm until next day. When warming it very “hot”, it gives warm over two nights! All these depend of which kind of wood I am burning (I use birch), how much, how cold it is outside and how big house. Now we have had night temperatures varying between -20 up to -31 Celsius. During the day sun is warming about 10 degrees. When having so cold, I have had to warm daily our fireplace.
  
  There are capacitive fireplaces which are equipped with ovens. Some people like to bake and make homemade food and then they buy that kind. It is ideal if we think that when warming fireplace then the oven is also ready for baking or to cook.
  
  There are also some assisting methods to warm houses on countryside: 1. Geothermal heating. 2. warming air conditioner. These two are used to assist heating methods above mentioned heating systems.
  
  We have Sauna in which we burn wood also. We warm our Sauna mainly on Saturdays and it helps very much our normal daily warming. That means, when we have Sauna day, we do not need to burn wood so much in our capacitive fireplace. The material, from which our fireplace is made of, is soapstone. Soapstone is also used to decorate homes also.

I love these images. They have a “feeling” to them of crisp, cold air. Coming from Minnesota, I know this feeling well. You did a nice job from the train. I love your take on Shakespeare. Very nice. I hope we can continue to blog about this idea of photographing while traveling some more.
