Our Christmas markets in Helsinki are very modest when compared to those in Central Europe. I guess that we are just starting to learn celebrate them. My photos are from 2009.

Nuestro Mercados navideños en Helsinki son muy modestos en comparación con los de Europa central. Creo que estamos empezando a aprender a celebrar. Mis fotos son a partir de 2009.

Christmas Markets are something that I have so far not managed to have experienced, despite living “relatively” close to some big European ones. Mostly it’s been because our weekends have been booked up completely with family events at this time of year, or we have been away in New Zealand, and this year foot operations and plaster casts have ruled it out completely. However, a visit is HIGH on my wish-list as these markets are so much more than just a “shopping experience”. I love that there are many hand-made items for sale, and even better, LOCALLY hand made, Brilliant!

  Thank You. I am glad that You noticed those locally made handcraft. Last year at this time in Helsinki we had very small amount of snow, but this year there are too much. That means that we have nearly the record of snow in 100 years.
  
  Well, I understand that family comes first, it is important. So keep this also in Your list.

It is really good and it doesn’t have such a crowd. So you can observe everything in a quiet manner.
I hope that I’ll visit our Christmas fair in Kiev this year and make some photos to share.

I would love to see such a market! We have nothing like that over her, at least that I have seen. The hand-crafted items would make very special gifts and it would be very enjoyable to visit each booth, taking plenty of time.

- Montucky, Can you possibly look into starting something like this in your area?
  Contacting local artisans and building it up over a few years might well be the start of a new local tradition for many people. It not only benefits the local arts and crafts people but also hopefully inspires people to buy locally made and HAND made goods that are usually better quality than plastic mass produced rubbish that falls apart after one use. It also helps people to be aware of what’s actually on offer in their local community and to appreciate local creative talent. Who knows, you could be responsible for starting a brand new Christmas tradition and introducing a little bit of the “European Christmas Market experience” to somewhere local to you!

I like the Christmas market. It is simple but very clear and comfortable. The range of goods is varied and interesting. The colorful hats, scarves and earmuffs look very tasty and are very useful for this season. In Figures 11 and 12 I like the wooden Christmas decorations. One of the lanterns in Figure 20 would I like to decorate our balcony. The lanterns look rustic and robust. The hand puppets in Figure 3 are original and are very suitable for children. I like hand-puppets, because it reminds me of my own childhood. We had a lot of fun to play with hand puppets. Several pieces of jewelry in Figure 4 are creative and color-coordinated very interesting. This Christmas market, I particularly like that he is not totally crowded with visitors. I like the church in the back ground too. I see the difference for the Christmas market in Cologne. In Cologne, the Christmas market is overcrowded with visitors. This year I attended only the little Christmas market in Refrath. There it was comfortable with a pleasant atmosphere of Christmas.   Thank You. In photo 12, You can see the wooden Cross of Thomas the Apostle. It is typical wooden Christmas decoration here and it originates from the Archipelago area. Those lanterns really look very rustic. If You look at photo 19, then You see our famous wooden coffee cup called in Finnish “Kuksa” and in English Gugsi. It is very popular in the most Northern part of our country in Lapland. Every outdoor people has one when they are outdoors in the nature and normally it is hanging outside of the backpack. It lasts one’s lifetime. If somebody would buy from here something special and typical, then the target is Kuksa. In Wikipedia (English):

What delightful and lovely shops with so many goodies! I haven’t heard of Christmas Markets and would love such here in our area of the U.S.A.

  I am glad that You visited here and thus heard about Christmas markets. I really thought that they exist everywhere. In Central Europe the tradition is long and now we are learning them also. I guess that they are good for local handcraft makers to present their “products” which cannot be found in big department stores and of course to get the feeling of Christmas.

This is not such a simple market – the stall holders all have their own little cabin for their crafts. They are lovely in the red and white, very happy and bright. We have a farmer’s market with food and crafts, but the stalls are not so elaborate. I love the wooden cups and would spend ages choosing the right one – as they are all individual. I also like the baskets and the scarves and hats, but would definitely buy one of the lanterns. They look great. What is the blacksmith making? Thank you for a lovely look around this special market. What an interesting Christmas market ! So many different crafts, mostly local I guess. This is a lovely way to visit a country or a city and its folk art. The day looks so cold ! The setting of the market is beautiful with those great old building all around. I like the musician and its organ grinder. Wonderful, wonderful post, thanks again 🙂

Hello Matti (I just discovered that Matti is your first name – is Sartenada your last name?!) Nice Christmas post – we have also Christmas markets here, it is a nice tradition. But I can see, that you do not have much snow in Finland – compared to us in denmark ;-).

  Well, Sartenada is not my last name, it is a pseudonym. In Internet, I want to be “unknown” and that I have been learned during years. Matti is my real first name really. My photos are from last year. This year there is in Helsinki about 50 cm snow. I had not time to visit in Helsinki in good time to take photos for this Christmas, so I had to present photos from last year. Thank You for Your visit and comment.

Me encantan los mercados de ventas. (en Costa Rica les decimos “chinamos”, pero no son tan lindos como los de tus fotos). Todo tan ordenado y limpio. Las figuras de cristal están hermosas así como todas las cosas que se exponen en los puestos de ventas…qué diferencia con el mundanal ruido de de por estos lugares!!!! Gracias por compartir tanta belleza y buen gusto.

I love your Christmas market in Finland.
Our Christmas markets are always from Germany. 😉
