Beautiful scenic views! What a gorgeous park that is! I would love to sit for hours on those huge rocks and study the water and all the islands!

Hi Montucky.
Thank You for Your making a virtual tour to Koli. As You said to sit hours and study and study the lake of Pielinen, which is huge lake and its islands, is the same to me. When looking at those islands one cannot be amazed that all those islands are pointing from North to South. I have never heard the official explanation, but my own is, that Ice Age which ended, has some word to say in their formation. Also the lake Pielinen with its islands are pleasant to one’s eye, also that green carpet in photos number 3 full with firs is beautiful.
Koli is the highest place in Southern Finland. Its height from sea level is 347 meters / 1138 feet. Not so much when comparing to Yours mighty mountains, but it is in South. This national park is quite easy to reach from Helsinki. By car in 6 to 7 hours, by plane flying or by train to Joensuu and then by car one hour.
I give a little bit info concerning that lake Pielinen. its area is 12,823 km2 / 4,951 square miles with length of 120 kilometers / 74 miles. What is interesting, I think so, that during winter there is made an ice road with length of 7 kilometers / 4 miles on this lake and it shortens distance between two settlements by 51 kilometers / 32 miles. I do not know is anywhere of the world there are ice roads than in Finland. I guess that it would be to You a great experience to drive on ice road!

So nice to read that You loved this place. The place is indeed gorgeous and there are plenty of guided paths to stroll around. On the top there is also a hotel for stay there. In winter slalom is natural.

Hello Heidi.
It is one of our popular national parks. In the North, there is Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. We lived nearby it and during one week, we made every day hikes on the area. Best of it is that You hike there among free roaming reindeers. Here is the post which shows that reindeers are there roaming free. This post is part of our road trip to Lapland, which have visited many times and made road trips.
